A reminder from your friendly neighborhood disabled journalist: War is a mass disabling event. It creates newly disabled people with visible and invisible disabilities. Losing electricity and power harms disabled people. There's always a disability angle to war.
FYI there’s still statues in Calgary’s Olympic Plaza downtown glorifying the “famous five” eugenicists and I think it should be removed and a plaque put in its place explaining Alberta’s history of eugenics which mostly sterilized Indigenous women and PWDs. Sick.
@JustinTrudeau The humanitarian situation? That's all you have to say? No call for Israel to end the violence? No call for Israel to end the occupation? What an utter disappointment you have become. #EndTheOccupation
@BarakRavid Where are they going to go? Israel controls all movement in and out of Gaza. It's a military occupation. The Palestinians aren't fighting back for no reason; they are resisting oppression and life in an open-air prison.
Edmonton AM with Mark Connolly, Tara McCarthy - Sep. 11, 2023: Can perceptions about body weight keep people from getting ahead in their careers? Great conversation with @SkyMcLaughlin https://t.co/2EWrWJbB8s

🇨🇦What Canadians Should Know About #Meta#UnblockCanadianNews
2006: Facebook launches its News Feed, training Canadian users to get their news on Facebook
2012: Facebook allows advertisers to share Sponsored Stories in its News Feed
10 years later…Facebook is making billions in advertising revenue (2022: $116.B) mostly from content it does not create....
2022: 77% of Canadians use Facebook (Statista)
2022: Facebook renames News Feed to Feed
2023: (Summer) Approx 50% of Canadians get their news from social media (-The Conversation)
2023: (Summer) Canada has worst wildfire season on record
2023: (Summer) Meta (Facebook parent company) starts blocking news in response to the Online News Act (which is unlikely to take effect until 2024).
2023: (Summer) Google is also subject to the Online News Act (but Google is not yet blocking news)
August 2023: Meta should now unblock news so Canadians in #Yellowknife and #Kelowna, which are evacuating due to devastating #wildfires, have trusted access to local breaking and emergency news (again, there will be no government repercussions to this unblock, just the potential to save some lives and reduce some stress since it's hard to break a decade of Canadians' online news habits when they are facing fire on their doorsteps)
Now tell me this, is there any other business in the country that would ever consider keeping a lifesaving product or service AWAY from Canadians who are in need, based on a law that doesn't stop them from providing this product or service for months?
Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg has updated his Threads account SEVEN TIMES with details about his fist fight with Elon Musk.
So, when I say that we are lacking humane tech leaders, this is what I mean.
Today, Saturday, August 19, Mark Zuckerberg can #UnblockCanadianNews with no repercussions whatsoever (except maybe a bruised ego?), ultimately ensuring Canadian citizens have access to news that they’ve been trained for a decade to get on his platform (a platform that makes him one of the Top 10 richest men in the world).
Speaking as a guy who used to oversee the company that built the last natural gas power plant in Alberta, and who understands electricity markets a bit, I can say the Premier’s argument here makes no sense. Pure gibberish. Who is advising her? Can they get someone better?
Missing woman in #NewTallCree, AB: Melinda Ruby Auger (58 y/o) was last seen on July 24. RCMP says Melinda hitchhikes and could be in the #HighLevel or #PeaceRiver area. She's 5'2, 123 lbs, has brown hair and brown eyes. RT?
The calls to #SearchtheLandfill will not simply go away.
More than 100 protestors gathered in Winnipeg to call for government action to bring these women home.
No sister, aunt, mother or daughter or anyone else is garbage.

@VeryBadLlama Good God, what kind of tweet is that @SarniaPolice ? Who have you got on your comms team? Maybe that woman has children to feed, maybe she is starving. Maybe not, I don't know, but this tweet was gross.
The #SearchtheLandfill story is receiving greater attention because it’s an international shame that Canada has left the bodies of Indigenous women in landfills.
No one’s loved one should be treated this way.
Bring these women home.
