These are the Accrington Pals — the 11th East Lancashire Regiment — marching through Accrington on 1 August 1915.
Local lads, mates from the same streets and mills, marching off proud as punch with the whole town watching. That was the Pals idea: fight alongside the men you grew up with.
Less than a year later, on the first day of the Somme at Serre, roughly 720 of them went over the top. In just 30–40 minutes, around 585 were casualties — killed, wounded or missing. Whole rows of houses in Accrington lost their sons and brothers in one morning.
That’s what “community” used to cost when men still had duty and backbone.
Lest we forget the real price of that war — and the stock we came from.

If i were a preacher I'd be in my little chapel saying -
"Brethren and sistren of the old mill towns... Listen 'ere. Most grooming gang offenders are already serving absurdly short jail sentences, given their horrific crimes.

The idea of these vile men being let out after serving just a third of their sentence is completely insulting.
