Australian Driver Avoids Jail After Killing Pakistani Student Praying in the Middle of an Adelaide road didn't Stop because he thought he Hit a Kangaroo.

Ashton Jacob Friend has received a suspended prison sentence and a 10-year driving ban after striking and killing 20-year-old Pakistani international student Samia Malik in Adelaide, Australia.

On May 6, 2025, Samia was reportedly kneeling in prayer on North East Road in Hillcrest for almost four minutes when Friend’s car hit her. He continued driving, claiming he thought he had hit a kangaroo.

After learning of the incident through news reports the next day, he realised a person had been struck.

Ashton Friend pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and leaving the scene of a fatal accident.

The court heard he was sober and driving below the speed limit, with the judge noting he had approximately 2.25 seconds to react.

He expressed remorse and apologised to Samia’s family, acknowledging that nothing he said could bring her back.
