This afternoon's bout of intensification in #Milton is pretty remarkable given the SST just north of the Yucatan is "only" about 28-29C. It's actually about to move into even warmer water, 30-31C, over the loop current in the SE Gulf. Whether it takes full advantage depends on the core structure (does an ERC start), but the theoretical MPI ("speed limit") here is probably pushing the boundaries of what this basin/planet can produce.

Katrina was 902mb at peak.
Rita was 895mb at peak.
Wilma was 882mb at peak.

First recon pass just now measured 898mb min pressure…rare company.
