A difficult milestone in #Afghanistan as we mark one year since the de facto authorities barred our Afghan female colleagues from entering UN premises across the country.

Our national female colleagues are indispensable to the UN’s mission, and delivering on our unwavering commitment to support people and communities in need.

On behalf of @UNOPS, I express my solidarity with our female colleagues.

Afghan women and girls must be allowed to return to school, return to work, and help shape their country's future.

I join leaders from across the @UN in urging the de facto authorities to immediately reverse these restrictions.

Honoured to host with African Union a special #AfricaDay event @UNCityCPH this week.

It was a moment to celebrate Africa's rich cultural diversity, its leadership and resourcefulness, and courage and aspirations of its peoples.

Through innovation, investment and solidarity, we can together build the resilient systems needed to advance dignity, equality, sustainable development and climate action.

It's time for the global community to step up and support Africa.

This is a moment of truth.

Multilateral cooperation is being questioned. The SDGs are off track. The climate goals are slipping. And developing countries are facing a $4.2 trillion yearly gap to finance the 2030 Agenda.

So, how can we work together to drive greater impact, at scale, to address immense needs? How can we better align policy, finance and implementation? 

The assessment of the pros/cons of a potential merger between @UNOPS & @UNDP to create a new UN agency on sustainable development is a key consideration under the #UN80 reform agenda.

There are risks, but there are also immense opportunities. I outlined UNOPS vision for the path ahead on the creation of this new entity, and the alternative options before us - including the launch of a joint venture on energy transition - to scale up implementation where it's needed most.  

I thank the Executive Board President and Member States for their guidance and strong words of support for UNOPS work in these crucial discussions.

The clock is ticking. If fertilizers and related raw materials cannot pass through the Strait of Hormuz, global food insecurity will skyrocket. 45 million more people are at risk.

Diplomacy is vital, but nature’s cycles don't pause for negotiations.

The toll on civilians and livelihoods nearly a month into this devastating war is immense.

The number of people uprooted and forced to flee their homes is increasing by the hour.

1 million people have been displaced in #Lebanon. 3.2 million in #Iran. No place is safe – in countries across the Middle East, schools, medical facilities and people’s homes are under constant attack.

Meanwhile, global impacts of this war will only cause more suffering. Millions are at risk due to severe disruptions in supply chains and rapid price hikes.

Only a diplomatic and peaceful solution can end this mayhem.

#Gaza: One year on, we commemorate and remember. Marin, our @UNOPS colleague killed when UN buildings were struck, five others were severely injured.

He is among at least 588 aid workers killed in Gaza since the war began, including our Loai, another UNOPS colleague.

I call for holding those responsible for all atrocities accountable.

Aid workers continue to be targeted in conflicts. They must be protected according to international law.

While the world’s attention is elsewhere, our #Gaza team continues to face unacceptable risks to deliver aid.

Yesterday, a @UNOPS tanker on its way to collect urgently needed fuel for distribution inside Gaza was struck from the direction of the sea. 
No one was injured. The tanker was however directly hit and damaged while empty, en route to the crossing to load.

Our teams are taking extraordinary risks every day to keep humanitarian operations and life-sustaining services. They should not have to do that under fire.

 I call for a full investigation into this latest incident.
Fuel must be allowed into Gaza consistently, its delivery facilitated safely and without interruption to keep humanitarian operations and essential services running: hospitals, water and sewage systems and bakeries.
