This week marks the anniversary of the passing of one of Africa’s greatest sons, Samora Machel, the former president of Mozambique. There were no mainstream media commemorations to honour him, and for good reason. Machel was an unapologetic anti-imperialist revolutionary whose vision for Mozambique was too radical for the West, especially amid the Cold War’s ideological battle between socialism and capitalism.

He dreamed of a free, socialist Mozambique where land belonged to those who worked it and Africa’s wealth served Africans. That dream put him at odds with Western capitalism, and he knew it.

He once warned, “If one day you hear the Europeans praise me, know that I have betrayed you.”

He was right. Today, those same Europeans have little to say about Samora Machel.
