Elon Musk was asked in an interview what he thinks happens when you die. The interviewer expected either a scientific answer (nothing, consciousness ceases) or a spiritual one (something continues). Elon gave neither. He paused for an uncomfortable duration and then said something that revealed a man who has thought about death more carefully than most people think about lunch.
He said he thinks the most likely outcome is that consciousness simply ends. Lights off. No continuation. No afterlife. No transfer. The electrical activity in the brain ceases and the subjective experience that constituted "you" is permanently deleted. He described this possibility with the clinical detachment of a man reading a system shutdown log.
Then he said the thing that nobody expected: he said he doesn't find this comforting. He finds it terrifying. The word "terrifying" from a man who regularly does terrifying things (launching rockets, betting his fortune, working 100 hour weeks in crisis mode) carries a different weight. The rockets are calculated terror. The death contemplation is unresolved terror. One has a spreadsheet. The other doesn't.
He connected the terror to the Mars mission. He said one of the driving forces behind making humanity multiplanetary is the extension of the light of consciousness. If consciousness is rare (and it may be the rarest phenomenon in the universe), then allowing it to be extinguished by a single asteroid, a single pandemic, or a single nuclear war on a single planet is the greatest possible waste. The Mars colony is not about escape. It is about redundancy. A backup drive for the most important data in the universe: the fact that anything is conscious at all.
The connection between personal mortality and the Mars mission is the connection that most people miss. Elon knows he will die. He has accepted that nothing follows. The acceptance drives him not toward nihilism but toward urgency. If this is all there is, if consciousness is a brief candle in an infinite dark, then the time available to extend that candle to another planet is limited by his own lifespan. He is racing his own death. The Mars timeline is not a business plan. It is a countdown against a deadline that he cannot negotiate.
The man who is afraid of death is building the thing that ensures consciousness survives after his doesn't. The terror is the fuel. The Mars colony is the response. And the man who finds death terrifying has converted the terror into the most ambitious construction project in human history because the alternative, sitting with the terror and building nothing, is the only thing more terrifying than death itself.
Today is my last day at OpenAI. It’s been an awesome ride, but I’m getting off a little early to pursue a new direction. I feel fortunate to have worked alongside some of the most incredible people I know. I’m especially grateful to @ALupsasca and Boris Alexeev for helping me navigate my first corporate job, and to @danintheory for his constant support. I’ll be rooting for you all!
"The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy."
Elon said that on Rogan. Everyone lost their minds. Almost nobody listened to what came next. He was talking about suicidal empathy: the kind that makes you tolerate the very thing that wants you gone.
If being tolerant means Western civilization disappears, we need the courage to question what tolerance means.
What Elon describes in America, Europe has been living since the 80s.
Same mechanism. A left that lost the working class went looking for a new electorate. In 2011, the French think tank Terra Nova put it in writing: give up on the workers and build a new coalition with minorities at its core. An electoral alliance between the left and immigration, out in the open and fully theorized.
We can see the result. Entire neighborhoods where the Republic no longer sets foot. Integration failed, not because people couldn't integrate, but because we stopped asking them to. We sold them welfare checks instead of a country.
But let me be clear: Europe can still be saved.
I think we're about to enter a historic period where Western countries will face a fairly simple choice.
Either fade away. Give up on who we are and make room for another operating system, Islamism. It's a collectivist project to the bone, where the individual counts for nothing against the group. And like every collectivism, it will eventually collapse too. It has never produced abundance anywhere. All it knows how to do is capture other people's. We wouldn't just lose the West. We'd lose everything.
Or take the lead again. Own the fact that we are a civilization. This is the civilization that invented modern science, the rule of law and individual liberty, and it's now inventing AI and robots. Set clear rules, enforce them, and invite everyone who lives here, whatever their origin, to be part of it for real.
That's what the left never understood. A kid from the banlieue has nothing to gain from a West that apologizes for existing. He has everything to gain from a West that wins. A civilization that believes in itself integrates people. A civilization that hates itself is one nobody wants to join.
Tolerance isn't an absolute value. It's a luxury only a strong civilization can afford.
Europe doesn't need less humanity. It needs to start believing in itself again.
I actually feel bad for Elon, even though I deeply disagree with him on some things.
Imagine trying to build a car company in California in the mid-2000s, when American manufacturing is being completely offshored and almost all of Wall Street thinks you’re a joke and is rooting for your failure, while the entire oil and gas industry is using all their power and leverage to make you fail.
But against all odds, you actually pull it off. You build cars that make electric vehicles desirable to millions of people, create an enormous number of quality American jobs, and force the global car industry to play catch up and move away from oil and gas.
You would think California would be proud of you and the team. Instead you find yourself having to fight a completely corrupt and incompetent left government impeding all your efforts while you sleep at the factory night after night to avoid collapse. At some point, you would go to the right too.
And because of your politics, it becomes a justification for people to celebrate your companies failing in their personal ideological fight with you. Even threats against you become something people explain away and use mental gymnastics to justify.
Meanwhile, people like Scott Galloway and Bernie Sanders who have made absolutely nobody better off other than themselves get to lecture you about your value to society and even call for your murder without grounds from their vacation home while you're on 20 hour benders in your factories trying to get things built for all of society. If this were me I would lose my mind.
Criticize his opinions. I do sometimes, especially on Ukraine. But the pleasure people take in wanting to destroy everything he’s built is hideous and frankly suicidal for the masses, especially coming from people who insist they care about workers, the climate, and civilization as a whole.
As you try to make good things for society you are confronted with a world that worships people who care only about the perception of being good people, while they actually fight against your tangible efforts of making improvements for humanity.
I don't think almost anyone would have made it out of that and if they did, they would probably not come away feeling so warm towards the left either. So I am rooting for Elon to succeed, and for humanity.

I often say we live in a deeply left-wing society. A society where the exceptional individual cannot exist, and where everything is organized to make sure he never does.
It starts at school. Minds are formatted to believe everyone is the same. That standing out is suspicious. That succeeding more than others is necessarily unfair.
We ended up confusing two things that have nothing in common: equality of opportunity and equality of outcome. The first is an ideal. The second is leveling everyone down.
The result: anything that sticks out gets shaved off.
And then there was an anomaly in the system.
Elon Musk.
He is in a completely different league from every other tech entrepreneur. And not on just one dimension.
His ability to go all in. In 2008, he put his last millions into SpaceX and Tesla while both were on the edge of bankruptcy. No plan B.
His skin in the game. He doesn't bet other people's money. He bets his own, his reputation, and today his personal safety.
His connection to reality. He doesn't run his companies from a comfortable ivory tower, between two committees and three reporting cycles. Marc Andreessen said it: he isn't aware of any other current CEO who operates the way Musk does. To find an equivalent, you have to go back to the great industrialists of the late 19th century. Every week, Musk identifies the biggest problem at each company, goes straight to the engineer on the front line, and fixes it. 52 weeks a year.
History has always treated this kind of anomaly the same way. Those who broke the established model were almost always rejected, mocked, persecuted.
Socrates, sentenced to drink hemlock for teaching young people to question.
Giordano Bruno, burned alive in Rome in 1600 for imagining an infinite universe.
Galileo, tried by the Inquisition, forced to recant, kept under house arrest until his death.
Gutenberg, who changed the world with the printing press, stripped of his workshop by his creditor.
Lavoisier, father of modern chemistry, guillotined in 1794.
Semmelweis, who understood that simply washing hands could stop women dying in childbirth. Ridiculed by his peers, died in an asylum.
Boltzmann, who defended the existence of atoms against the entire scientific establishment. Died in 1906, just before Jean Perrin proved him right.
Wegener, whose continental drift was mocked for decades. Died in Greenland in 1930, vindicated thirty years later.
Nikola Tesla, who electrified the world, died broke in a New York hotel room.
Alan Turing, who broke Enigma and laid the foundations of computing, convicted in 1952 and chemically castrated. Dead at 41.
Barry Marshall, who had to swallow a culture of bacteria himself to prove ulcers came from an infection. Nobel Prize 2005.
Dan Shechtman, discoverer of quasicrystals, asked to leave his research group. Linus Pauling mocked him, saying there were no quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists. Nobel Prize 2011.
Katalin Karikó, who worked on messenger RNA, demoted by her university and denied funding for years.
Her work made the Covid vaccines possible. Nobel Prize 2023.
The pattern never changes. First they ignore them. Then they mock them. Then they fight them. And they celebrate them once they're dead.
I don't know what form it will take, but I'm almost certain we're heading toward one of two scenarios.
First scenario: the Democrats manage to destroy Musk. We slide into a 1984 where innovating becomes extremely hard. And ironically, it could end very badly, including for the people supporting that project today. A system that crushes its anomalies always ends up collapsing on itself.
Second scenario: he manages to impose his vision of abundance. And for the first time in human history, the person who brought a new paradigm will be alive to see it. And to build it.
Galileo never saw the scientific revolution. Semmelweis never saw antisepsis save millions of lives. Tesla never saw the world run on the alternating current he had imagined.
Musk could see his.
Personally, I think humanity is ready. Neuralink, Optimus, SpaceX. Augmented human intelligence, automated physical labor, space finally opened up. The combination of these three building blocks can do it.
The only question is whether, this time, we let the anomaly see it through.
Are we really going to be dumb enough to hold back the one guy who can take us to abundance, just so we can stay comfortable in our mediocrity?
In Ian Banks' Culture books, the Culture is a civilization of compute abundance. Each General System Vehicle is a loose sandbox environment practicing different ideologies, and citizens freely move between ships to experience different lifestyles.
Want communal life? There's a ship. Ultra-orthodox religion? Another. Beach chilling? One famous for its beaches.
With enormous compute, you don't need to trade off who decides the trajectories. Just launch another docker station for another rollout. In that world, your autonomy is backed by the compute.
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up.
So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us."
Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026.
There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true.
But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.
Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were:
1) End the war
2) Focus on cost of living/inflation
3) Put America First
4) Change our relationship to Israel
Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.)
In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you.
The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.
If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest.
But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.
I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.
@JDVance 1) End the war
2) Focus on cost of living/inflation
3) Put America First
4) Change our relationship to Israel
These are all the same thing. The cost of living is high because Israel convinced Trump to start a war with Iran, instead of putting America first.
