En 1949 un médico inglés publicó 700 palabras en The Lancet que deberían leerse en voz alta cada vez que entra una generación nueva a un hospital.
Casi nadie las lee.

The cardiac cycle, through the lens of echocardiography.
This figure aligns the ECG, cardiac pressures, valve motion, Doppler signals, and LV volume to show what happens throughout the cardiac cycle, with particular emphasis on diastole.
Key diastolic phases:
Isovolumic relaxation: Aortic valve closes , mitral valve remains closed. LV pressure falls without a change in volume.
Early rapid filling: Mitral valve opens (MO), producing the E wave on transmitral Doppler.
Diastasis: Passive LV filling slows as LA and LV pressures equalize.
Atrial contraction: Atrial systole generates the A wave, contributing the final portion of LV filling before systole.
Echocardiography provides a comprehensive assessment of diastolic function by evaluating:
🔹Transmitral inflow Doppler (E and A waves)
🔹 Left atrial size and function
🔹 Mitral valve leaflet motion
🔹 (Often complemented by tissue Doppler imaging and pulmonary venous flow.)
Understanding how these parameters relate to pressure and volume changes is fundamental to recognizing normal physiology and diagnosing diastolic dysfunction.
