We were delighted this week to welcome Miatta Fahnbulleh (@Miatsf) , Minister for Energy Consumers, to our Manchester headquarters at Brabazon House.

The visit offered the Minister – whose portfolio covers smart meters, as well other energy consumer issues, fuel poverty and implementing the Government’s Warm Homes Plan – the opportunity to see first-hand how the smart meter network is giving almost 20 million homes and small businesses the tools to manage energy consumption through real-time insights and more accurate billing.

It was also a chance to highlight the work we are doing to upgrade and modernise the network for energy consumers. The launch of the 4G Communications Hubs this month will ensure that smart metering services for consumers continue after the planned phase-out of 2G and 3G by the end of 2033.

We look forward to working with the Minister by harnessing smart meter data and leveraging the metering network to help achieve Britain’s policy goals.

On Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, we wanted to share how smart meter data is part of the solution to tackle fuel poverty through helping consumers understand energy consumption identifying areas in fuel poverty and targeting support.

The GTC tool allows them to connect to and communicate with smart meters, to remotely diagnose issues and lower the need for costly and time-consuming visits to premises – saving them time and money, and reducing their carbon footprint.

Speaking on the partnership, Paul Clark, Partnerships Director at DCC, said: “I am pleased to welcome GTC as a DCC User. GTC is the first independent network operator to become a DCC User. We are welcoming any increasingly diverse range of organisations to the DCC network, reflecting the value our network offers as the GB energy transition progresses.”

As #NetZeroWeek is coming to an end, we’re reflecting on the huge role that the DCC smart meter network is already playing in helping to decarbonise the UK economy. Our network now connects over 31m meters, and transmits 2.2 billion messages a month – roughly 73 million messages every day.

Our Chief Strategy and Regulation Officer, Stève Hervouet, recently wrote a blog on leveraging existing assets to address the challenge of climate change.

“The UK has led the way in cutting its emissions, with over 50% reduction since 1990. But hitting the second 50% in the current economic and geopolitical climate will be much harder.”

We believe that maximising existing assets, like the DCC smart metering network, will be a key driver in enabling the UK to reach its ambitious climate goals.
