This is what fossil fuels (and their mates) really are scared of.

Even if you use them to generate electricity for EVs or heat pumps or cooking, you use a lot less if the end use is electric.

And honestly, electric products are usually simply better as well as more efficient.

@OctopusEnergy Can Intelligent Go get a "solar-only" toggle in the app? My @Hypervolt 3 Pro has solar capture but OCPP overrides it. EV owners could trickle-charge from excess solar & toggle fully charge if required — better for us and the grid in summer! ☀️

Heat pumps are the most efficient heating technology ever invented.

They harvest and compress pre existing heat in the air, ground or water and transport it where it is needed.

That energy is all around us.

And it does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

@agile_phil @OctopusEnergy @hypervolt I see it as a kind of block for OCPP, but not sure how it works - the Hypervolt does Solar charge on it’s own via a mode, but I can’t switch OCPP off without disconnecting the charge from IO which isn’t easy for general users, and probably not good for Octopus systems

Amazing but true…. Even if all the electricity powering a heat pump was generated from gas, it’s so efficient it uses a lot less gas than a boiler!

And an electric car powered by electricity from gas uses less fossil fuel energy than a petrol car… ELECTRIFICATION IS AMAZING

and ofc once you have heat pumps and electric cars you are not stuck with fossil fuels, you can use any source you like for the electricity. Only 2/3 of people can charge an EV at home, but no one can with petrol. Solar panels will charge cars and power heat pumps. But gas boilers and petrol cars are totally dependent on the horribly unreliable global fossil fuel market.

Ofc, the fossil lobbyists know this which is why they use their astonishing wealth and influence to make people hate EVs and heat pumps

@OctopusEnergy @g__j The 6 hour a day charging limit makes total sense, but an option for the auto schedule to only charge for 6 hours would make implementing it easy for everyone! Hopefully this is already being developed 🙏🚙🔋

Nearly 90% of these fees go to the Treasury. It’s a symptom of our out-of-control electricity system that govt charges rent to wind farms and then adds taxes onto bills to pay for them. To cut subsidies & make electricity cheaper, we need urgent reform of this ‘circular taxation’

Electrification is vastly more efficient than combustion technologies:

🚘 An electric car uses about 75% less final energy than an ICE car.

🔥 A heat pump delivers about 4x more heat for the same energy input.

Note: Of course efficiency will differ between models and context.
