Check out our new paper just published in JAMES 🎉 we show that deep learning allows us to combine different satellite observations together to estimate more accurate and higher resolution surface geostrophic currents: https://t.co/8NhxWlKbXX
It felt fitting to submit the paper on SWOT launch day! This method is still a work in progress and this paper will be my first in grad school, so any feedback would be very welcome.
📣 PRE-PRINT OUT 📣
Check out our new pre-print using deep learning to more accurately map SSH by combining satellite altimetry and SST observations. I’m excited to share what I’ve been working on with Georgy Manucharyan and Patrice Klein this past year: https://t.co/kMMSZ1pgQp
The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite has separated from its @SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. SWOT begins #TrackingWorldWater now and will cover the Earth's surface worldwide at least twice every 21 days for at least three years.
We’re set to launch the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite at 6:46am ET (1146 UTC) on Dec. 15. SWOT will evaluate the world’s oceans, lakes, and rivers, #TrackingWorldWater and the effects of climate change. https://t.co/vJeLvWgDV2
Had a great week at the OSTST meeting in Venice. It was eye-opening to see how much thought goes into satellite altimetry observations before they reach people like me. We’re all counting down the days for the launch of SWOT in just 1 month from now! (see scale model) #OSTST22
2D turbulence on the surface of a bubble. I had fun showing this to K-12 students yesterday at the UW Aquatic Sciences Open House, though was left surprisingly stumped when a ~5 year-old asked “what’s turbulence?”
@ulloa_hn The bubbles were made using soapy water and a small amount of glycerin to make them last longer (credit goes to Georgy Manucharyan for figuring out the setup!)
@ulloa_hn Good question, I didn’t work out the Re, it’s not something the kids would ask 😉 I feel like it might be non-trivial to estimate a viscosity for motions on the surface 🤔 lmk if you have thoughts!
Check out our #OSM22 poster to learn about our ongoing efforts to use machine learning to more accurately reconstruct sea surface height fields from satellite altimetry observations:
