I wanted to be a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 more than anything.
It is December 2018. Bangalore.
9pm. The house is finally quiet.
In the room next to us, my one-year-old twins are finally asleep. The baby monitor blinks green on the kitchen table between us.
I am sitting at the dining table with my wife. An envelope is lying next to the monitor on the table.
It is the "Permanent Offer" from 𝗜𝗜𝗧 𝗕𝗼𝗺𝗯𝗮𝘆.
For three years, I have been stalling.
I got my first offer in 2015 - from IIT Bombay and IISc. I didn't want to say no, but I couldn't afford to say yes.
So I lived a double life. Completing the handover of my company to Mercedes, flying to Mumbai to teach classes, hoping I could eventually switch full-time.
Now, the moment of truth is here.
𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿, 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗜. The real deal.
I look at the salary.
₹𝟭,𝟮𝟱,𝟮𝟮𝟬 per month + HRA.
Rent in Powai - because IIT Bombay has a three-year housing queue. School fees. Sending money home to my parents.
The math doesn't add up.
My wife sees the panic in my eyes. She touches my hand.
"Arjun," she says. "Don't worry. We will 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲."
And time stops.
Because that is the exact phrase my mother used to say.
"We will 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲."
Suddenly, I am 9 years old. There is a loud knock at the door. The debt collectors are back.
My mother whispers, "Tell them Papa isn't home."
I remember walking to the door, heart hammering, preparing to lie to grown men screaming at us.
I remember exactly what "We will 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲" means.
Fear. Hiding. Survival.
Through the monitor, I hear one of my twins turn in their crib.
I look at my wife. Then at the closed door where they are sleeping.
And I know: my children will never answer that door.
I put the letters down.
"No," I whisper. "We are not going to just manage."
I decline the offer. Again.
That night, I grieve. The freedom to do pure research. The joy of mentoring brilliant kids. Answering to no one but my own curiosity.
I feel like a sellout. Trading the purity of science for the mess of commerce.
I go to bed believing I have made a binary choice: Purpose OR Paycheck.
It took 7 years to realize I was wrong.
My first company failed. My second nearly killed me. I chased bad clients, hired wrong, ran out of money twice.
But eventually, the bills stopped being scary. Then they stopped mattering.
Something strange followed.
I went back to IISc. As adjunct faculty.
I can finally afford to be the professor I wanted to be.
But here is the twist: I am a better professor now.
I don't teach only from textbooks. I teach from the trenches.
What happens when an AI model meets a P&L statement. The messy, expensive reality of AI you can't learn in a lab.
The choice I agonized over was a lie.
The answer wasn't Either/Or.
The answer was Both.
Building a safety net didn't kill the dream. It enabled it.
The detour was the education.
That is what I have poured into my AI Masterclass.
Cohort 1 sold out. Cohort 2 opens Feb 2nd.
