People in Ontario can barely afford rent, wages aren’t keeping up, and more and more families are living under crushing stress. And adding to that stress, Doug Ford’s answer is to expand online gambling, flood people with betting ads, put alcohol on every corner, gut public healthcare, and then act surprised when addiction services are overwhelmed and homelessness keeps rising.

What did he think would happen?

When people are struggling, some turn to gambling or alcohol to escape for a while. That’s the reality of addiction. And instead of protecting people, this government is cashing in on it.

If Ontario is going to profit from gambling and alcohol, then it has a responsibility to properly fund addiction treatment, mental health care, and healthcare overall and make those supports easy to access before people hit rock bottom. Instead, Ford keeps making the problem worse and leaving families to deal with the wreckage.

And let’s stop pretending this homelessness crisis just appeared out of nowhere. When you underfund healthcare, ignore mental health, fail to invest in housing and treatment, and make life more expensive and unstable, you are actively driving homelessness. Doug Ford’s policies are helping create this crisis, and people across Ontario are paying the price.
