What exactly are New Jersey voters supposed to believe happened here?

That roughly 6,600 noncitizens somehow ended up on the voter rolls, around 400 votes were tied to that group, officials resisted handing over the full records, and yet, by some miracle, the problem stops precisely at the number Governor Mikie Sherrill was willing to announce?

That is awfully convenient.

Why did the disclosure come only after President Trump publicly identified New Jersey as part of a broader noncitizen-registration problem?

Why is the state more interested in controlling the investigation than opening the books?

Why should anyone assume the admitted number includes every dead registrant, duplicate record, former resident, outdated address, fictitious voter, or ballot connected to a name that should no longer be active?

And why is the public being told to treat 6,600 as a conclusion instead of a starting point?

Maybe the number is complete.

Maybe every other category has been thoroughly examined.

Maybe the same officials who allowed the rolls to deteriorate can be trusted to investigate themselves behind closed doors and report every uncomfortable finding.

Or maybe the public was shown the part that had become impossible to hide.

That is the problem with partial confessions: they do not restore trust. They create a new question.

What remains undisclosed?

Sherrill wants the press conference to close the matter. It should do the opposite.

Because when officials reveal the tip only after pressure, resist an outside review, and insist the water beneath it is perfectly clear, the iceberg is not a metaphor anymore.

It is a warning.
