Many people are familiar with the issue of human trafficking, but not the reasons many human trafficking victims refuse to seek assistance. The resistance to assistance many occur for various reasons, such as brainwashing or fear of the unknown. Each year, 600,000 to 2 million people are internationally trafficked (Reid, J. A., 2011). Of this large number, it is difficult to determine how many babies are born into trafficking. As these babies turn into children, teenagers, young adults, and adults, the trafficking lifestyle may be all they know. Many are repeatedly told they can not survive without their predator, they do not deserve an education, or they deserve the abuse they receive. Once a person hear this many times, they begin to believe it is all true. They depend on their predator for everything, from shelter to food and clothing. Many know no other type of lifestyle. They do not know what it is like to have the freedom to come and go or to be able to make their own choices and decisions.ย
According to Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco, many human traffickers present themselves to their victims as lovers or heroes instead of as dangerous predators (2017). This more friendly and approachable personality and behavior may allow a bond to form between the trafficker and the victim. Some victims feel shame for allowing the trafficking to occur or failing to escape from it. Many victims do not want to be frowned upon or judged by others, and feeling remaining in the trafficking lifestyle could prevent anyone from finding out.ย
The underground sex trafficking network is comprised of a few key players aside from trafficking victims. Traffickers may be anyone from a pimp to a family member. They are the only ones to benefit from the trafficking network. Traffickers transport the victims to the location in which they will be forced to "work." These predators stay connected to one another to remain updated on law enforcement activities and other events that may hinder operations" (Dank, M., PhD, Downey, P. M., et al., 2014). Some victims become what is known as "recruiters." These individuals are responsible for recruiting others for various positions, such as drivers, security, or services. Although trafficking does not need these things in order to function, these positions aid in expanding operations without being detected or raising suspicions.ย
