Shamin Mohamed Jr. (@smjr2000) from @LetsStopAIDS reminds us of the devastating impacts the funding cuts have towards young people, especially key and vulnerable populations.
The world must not lose momentum to #endAIDS.
So inspired by meeting this powerful group of amazing advocates & community representatives in Ottawa 🇨🇦 yesterday.
Thank you to @LetsStopAIDS for the wonderful organizing and to the Honourable @Rob_Oliphant for co-sponsoring our meeting on Parliament Hill - the real place for people power!
There was so much wisdom, determination, care, passion, and love from the different speakers. I was profoundly moved by the compelling personal testimonies and strong solidarity with communities across the world. Friends, you made me feel strong!
And at this pivotal moment in the global AIDS response amid so much devastation & disruption, I am confident that Canadian civil society will continue to forcefully make the case for the continued investment of the Canadian government not only domestically, but also in the global #HIVresponse, including @UNAIDS and the @GlobalFund.
We are all stronger together. #endAIDS
Honoured to meet with the 🇨🇦 Canadian Foreign Affairs Committee and deeply grateful for the warm welcome extended to @UNAIDS and our partners from @LetsStopAIDS. Here’s what I shared with the Committee:
1️⃣ Pandemics, like HIV, thrive on inequalities.
Canada has long been leader in global health security recognizing that the health of Canadians is intrinsically linked to the health of people everywhere.
2️⃣ We are at a critical juncture in the global HIV response.
Life-saving treatment and prevention programmes are being disrupted by funding shortfalls, while legal and structural barriers continue to put the most vulnerable — especially adolescent girls, young women, and LGBTQ+ communities — at risk. However it is still possible to #endAIDSby2030. With new innovations like long-acting injectables, bold community-led approaches, and staying strong on human rights, we can drive down new infections and save lives.
3️⃣ Canada’s continued political & financial support matters.
As a long-standing champion of #GlobalHealth, Canada plays a vital role in shaping the future of the HIV response—through its contributions to UNAIDS, the @GlobalFund, and its voice on UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board. 🙏🏾

📣 "Now is not the time to lose momentum"
Powerful statements by community leaders from around the world calling for continued global solidarity to the global HIV response.
I’m in Geneva this week as the NGO Delegate for North America at the 56th @UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board Meeting. We’re working on the next Global AIDS Strategy (2026–2031) and addressing the impact of abrupt underfunding on the global HIV response.
As @LetsStopAIDS celebrates 21 years, the global HIV movement - and UNAIDS itself - faces challenges as serious as when we first began. But this time, we have the tools to reach zero new HIV infections. What we need now is the political will and resources to use them.
With funding shrinking, anti-rights movements growing, and inequalities deepening, we’re calling for a Strategy that delivers more than promises. It must protect human rights, be evidence-based and people-centred, ensure accountability, and properly fund community leadership.
@ngopcb
Communities are ready to lead, and the Strategy needs to make that possible.

Exciting news! Incredibly proud to announce my election as NGO Delegate of North America on the @UNAIDS PCB representing @LetsStopAIDS for a 2-year term, starting January 2024.
The #UNAIDS PCB is where all the major global actions are coordinated in the fight against #HIV, with countries, civil society, and #UN agencies all coming together.
