A Message from Niger’s Military Official
Dear brothers in arms, since our CNSP brothers came to power, we notice a deterioration in the security situation in our country and particularly in the three-border area. This new regime has only served its own interests. We die by dozens every day but they are not even able to pay tribute to our martyrs. The death of all these valiant soldiers is their responsibility. Some of us still didn't receive our July salaries and left their families in town to serve our country. How are we going to feed our families or even prepare our kids for school next month?
We're out of ammunition and we've run out of enough fuel to patrol the different villages. We've been out of air support for almost 4 weeks. The first victims of the CNSP are ourselves because we are abandoned to our fate. All we do is pray and ask our families to pray for us because the threat is growing. Civilians are leaving their villages, it's really sad because before everything was going so well for our country. Today you want to use us as human shield and cannon flesh?
We will not fight for a lost cause and leave our families to grieve. We are responsible family just like you and our families are counting on us. We will never fight for your interests. We are engaged in the army for the interest and protection of the people.
I'm a family father and I won't sacrifice myself to leave a widow and 3 orphans without a reason. I can’t wait to get off my mission and have my baby girl calling on me every night.
We are asking the CNSP to find a diplomatic exit because we are not ready. God bless Niger and protect his people
I preffer to remain anonymous.
This isn't fair!
How can Kano get N5bn and Bayelsa also N5bn? Kano has 5+ times the population of Bayelsa.
Borno gets N5bn and Lagos also N5bn? Borno is up north and farther away from ports. The impact of the increase in fuel price affects goods more up north than in the south!
The Nigerian billionaires and Tinubu's Tax Reform
It has been a refreshing experience, in the last one week, to read very strong endorsements of President Tinubu's tax reform by at least five major national newspapers via their editorials.
I align with the view of Professor Niyi Akinnaso who wrote, yesterday, in his Nation Newspaper column, that the media should assist the government in achieving its development goals in the overall interest of the people instead of unrelenting negative reporting.
Our country has a chronic revenue problem which left previous governments no option than to borrow. Available records show that we have over N75 trillion in foreign and local debts.
We have an economy that is reported to be the largest in Africa at almost $500 billion in GDP size, with an estimated 200 million plus population. In comparison with South Africa, with about 50 million population and second largest economy in Africa, we are nowhere near in terms of tax revenue. While South Africa has tax to GDP ratio of 27.3%, our country is crawling at 10.86%!
For proper context, the richest man in Africa is a Nigerian and the second richest man is a South African, Johann Rupert. The Personal Income Tax Rupert paid, as individual, to the South African government in 2022 was more than the entire tax collected by the 36 states of Nigeria in 2021.
There are three Nigerians among the 15 richest Africans whose business interests cut across various sectors - from retail to banking, oil & gas, mining, telecoms, real estate, manufacturing, food and beverage e.t.c. The combined wealth of the three Nigerians on the Africa's rich list is put at $27.4billion whereas Rupert's wealth is put at $10.7billion.
Here is the interesting twist: The rich and wealthy Nigerians live in states within Nigeria and do most of their businesses in Nigeria, yet, what one wealthy South African paid as his Personal Income Tax in one year was more than the entire revenues of 36 states in Nigeria.
In Naira terms, South Africa collected N27.76 trillion in Personal Income Tax in 2022, while Nigeria with population 4 times bigger than South Africa collected N1.6trillion in total IGR of states.
Our tax system is dysfunctional especially at the state level. This is why our states and Federal Government can not fund big infrastructural projects and social services. It is the reason the Taiwo Oyedele led Tax and Fiscal Reform Committee put together by President Tinubu has come at the right time.
The committee aims to close annual N20 trillion tax gap Nigeria is denied within the next few years, by bringing more eligible taxpaying Nigerians into the tax bracket. This does not mean that the Federal Government is planning on raising taxes. Far from it! It only means time has caught up with wealthy Nigerians would have hitherto evade paying their taxes.
The committee already has its job cut out for it. President is determined to reset the finances of the country to generate the required money to fund real development and improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
@adamugarba Please, if you don't have anything good to say, please be mute... you are polygamous and not patriotic, Nigeria. What's good about the ministerial appointment?
I wish them the best of luck, but this is total failure...
There are 5,690 Bureau De Change (BDC) in Nigeria (Aug 2023).
Lagos houses 52% (2,958) of total BDC.
FCT is next with 20.7% (1,179)
Kano follows with 17.2% (981)
Anambra: 259
Kaduna: 55
Abia: 50
Oyo: 32
Enugu: 25
Rivers: 24

I had the honour today of performing the historic groundbreaking of the Qatar Sanabil Project, initiated by Qatar Charity for the construction of the Kaduna Economic City and provision of Mass Housing for the Less Privileged in Kaduna State. I was joined at the ceremony by top officials of the Kaduna State Government, Embassy of the State of Qatar, Qatar Charity and enthusiastic citizens of our dear state.
Located at Millennium City, Kaduna, the Economic City, when completed, will provide world class infrastructure and make Kaduna a reference point in modern and affordable accommodation, adequate security and conducive atmosphere for business activities. The Economic City will facilitate international trade. It will serve as a platform for entrepreneurs and traders. It will help harness product value chain opportunities and improve economic growth. In the Economic City, there will be Houses for the Poor, Clinics, Shops, Poultry Farms, Farmlands for Rainy Season and Irrigation Farming.
The Mass Housing Project for the Less Privileged is a major contribution towards putting roofs over the heads of the poor, underserved and vulnerable in our state. This will go a long way in addressing a major gap in our Interventions in the Housing Sector over the years.
Other empowerment programs that the poor, underserved and vulnerable in Kaduna State will benefit from Qatar Charity include: scholarships for orphans and children of the poor, distribution of sewing machines, welding machines , irrigation pumping machines, salon kits, and drilling of hundreds of boreholes across the 23 local governments of Kaduna State.
The groundbreaking ceremony is a clear indication that our administration’s drive for investments in order to revitalize the economy of the state is beginning to yield results. Our vision is to make Kaduna the Leading Economic Hub in the North. We want to create a business cluster that will drive competition in the Northern Region. Kaduna State is rich in natural and human resources. It is the gateway to many parts of Nigeria. It is a transportation hub. The immediate past government worked assiduously to upgrade the infrastructure in the state. We are determined to build on that legacy to fasttrack the economic development of the state.
Our sincere appreciation to the Ambassador of the State of Qatar and Qatar Charity for matching their words with actions. The Kaduna State Government will give Qatar Charity all the support it needs to accomplish these two important projects. I call on other investors to avail themselves of the opportunities existing in our dear State. The incentives are very attractive. Our people are welcoming. Our Ease of Doing Business is second to none in Nigeria. Our doors are wide open for genuine investors.
Senator Uba Sani,
Governor, Kaduna State.
August 15th, 2023.
