Very cool, and great teamwork! It looks like you both are having a lot of fun!
My dog sport of choice is lure coursing, and my whippet had his first trial yesterday. I feel like we need a #ScientistsDoingDogSports hashtag!
When I’m not PhDing, I’ve been going all-in on dog sports and boy are we having a blast! Taking time to cultivate my hobbies and develop community outside of grad school helps me to feel refreshed and tackle my research. It’s one of the biggest lessons grad school taught me.
I am loving the addition of the #MGM2023 Trivia Champion plaque to my maize shelf! I would like to thank my team for knowing sports, celebrity, and meme trivia and more broadly for being great people to do science with every day!
@ETwilbertson@MerKhaiBurch Please do not comment if you do not know the context. The offending comments were not relevant or appropriate at time or place they were stated.
This was an ugly moment for our community. Not only did we fail to interrupt the comments as they were happening, but we let the clapping be the loudest response. Any one of us could have said something in the moment, and we all failed. We need to do better.
What made this worse was that people clapped after this comment/speech. Hundreds of people listened, and no one said anything. They clapped. I felt too uncomfortable and shocked to get up, collect my thoughts, and say something 4/
Dr.MariaElena Zavala's talk at #MGM2023 was amazing. Dr. Zavala talked about research, mentors & work to increase the number of historically excluded folks in the academy. The Q&A session however had VERY disparaging comments about Indigenous peoples and I want to tell you why 🧵
Dept. of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at UMN is seeking to fill a President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of climate smart agriculture. 2 year position starting with an initial, renewable 12-month appointment with the possibility of advancing to a tenure track position.
Please RT! !!
My lab is looking for a postdoctoral associate in Plant Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics. Anyone interested in epigenetics and bioinformatics is encouraged to apply. Experiences are NOT required! https://t.co/HfPC1BjXhr
We are excited to publish this work in @PlantPhys: https://t.co/RiEMxYCZwq with @DamonLisch. We created two potentially novel imprinted genes using Mutator transposons. There are no things that transposons can't do!
If you are studying methylation in plants and you're not looking at CDSs, you are mostly studying TEs, many of which like to live near genes. So most of your DMRs near genes are likely to be TEs, which are often polymorphic, so mapping to the reference genome is a problem.
University of Florida's Meixia Zhao will present today's GDCB Seminar, "Epigenetic silencing of transposable elements and the effects of transposon silencing on meiotic recombination in maize," at 1:10 p.m. in 1414 MBB.

There are still a few slots left to fill for the semester. If you work in the maize / evolution / genome diversity spheres and want to present your work to an enthusiastic audience, please sign up!
#Zeavolution maize evolution webinar series starting up again in Sept. This semester @sna8 will be hosting! If you want to join the slack, DM one of us. And if you'd like to present, please sign up here! https://t.co/sDXEJN9hkF
Now that crossing season is slowing down many places, please look forward to the fall semester and sign up to present at the Zeavolution webinar series! This is my favorite seminar series to share new data with evolution-minded folks. Reach out if you need more info.

Today we send off high school teachers April Kinder and Rowena Frianeza, who have been in our lab this summer through ISU's Research Experience for Teachers program. I am very grateful to their contributions to our lab and look forward to meeting their students over Zoom!
