Richard Norris, who was disfigured by an accidental self-inflicted gunshot, lived reclusively for 15 years even resorting to wearing a mask to hide his own face.

He accidentally shot himself in the face aged 22 in 1997, blowing off his nose, cheekbones, lips, teeth and jaw.

Surgeon Eduardo Rodriguez attempted multiple unsuccessful surgeries before performing a full face transplant in 2012.

Norris became the first person to successfully receive a new face transplant.
