This important, novel but conveniently overlooked study by Coyle et al in 1988 https://t.co/GLFz3ptZ32 examined two groups of cyclists with similar VO2max values but with quite different exercise times to fatigue (61 vs 29 minutes) when cycling at 88%VO2max.
Characteristics of the more durable cyclists were: Lower rates of muscle glycogen use during exercise; much lower rates of CHO oxidation (2.3 vs 3.5g/min) during exercise; much higher rates of fat oxidation (1.02 vs 0.39g/min); lower blood lactate concentrations during exercise; greater percentage of type 1 muscle fibres (67 vs 47%); but similar muscle mitochondrial enzyme activities in both groups. The authors concluded that these differences were due to “continued neurological and/or muscular adaptations that reduce muscle glycogenolysis specifically when cycling” (p.2629-2630).
Their finding that rates of CHO oxidation were much lower in the more durable athletes conflicts absolutely with their simultaneous promotion of their then and still unproven hypothesis (see our upcoming Endocrine Reviews article) that superior endurance requires high rates of CHO and low rates of fat oxidation. In fact they were likely studying two groups of athletes differing in their habitual diets - the durable group eating a high fat diet; the less durable athletes, a high CHO diet.

Is it obligatory to ingest >90g carbohydrate/hr if one wants to run a sub-2hr marathon? This theory is based on 2 key presumptions. First that the oxidation of fat provides essentially no energy for elite athletes running at 21.2km/hr. Second that the rate of exogenous carbohydrate oxidation by the muscles during 2 hours of exercise exactly equals the rate of carbohydrate ingestion.
@PhilipPrins11 and I evaluate these assumptions and conclude that the 2hr marathon will only be run by athletes able to extract at least some energy from fat oxidation when running at such a high intensity for 2 hours.
