As we approach the nation's 250th birthday, PBS News is looking at some notable, but lesser-known, people and moments in American military history.
Of the more than 350,000 Black U.S. service members who served in World War I, 89% were assigned to labor support units due to discrimination.
But one segregated infantry regiment came out of the war highly decorated and renowned: the 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Harlem Hellfighters."
PBS News' Cecilia Lallmann explores the regiment’s storied legacy, from its beginnings as New York State’s first all-Black National Guard unit to its historic achievements during World War I.
This post was produced by Cecilia Lallmann, Shyla Duff, Julia Griffin, Travis Daub and Dan Cooney.
😱 Terrifying video showing someone's home during the M7.8 earthquake that hit the Philippines last week.
The family pets didn't know what to do 😭
The second video shows the pets running outside and the ground cracking there too.

Stunning lack of sea ice accelerates major Antarctic winter climate shift with record high temps for 3 straight weeks. West coast heat rose more than 20*C above norm with 250K sq miles of ice missing vs. 1991-2020 averages, per scientists/satellites. https://t.co/5qH1rM3VzL
A source told the Washington Post that millions of dollars allocated for the Secret Service was redirected for ballroom project construction, despite Pres. Trump's claims the ballroom won't include taxpayer money. Jonathan O'Connell of The Washington Post reports.
A brand new bridge between Detroit and Canada is finished and ready to open. It would speed up traffic for millions of trucks, cut delays for American businesses, and help the auto industry that employs people in every state. There is just one problem.
Donald Trump won’t let it open.
Here is why.
The family that owns the old bridge stands to lose business when the new one opens. So in January, they gave one million dollars to a pro-Trump super PAC.
Weeks later they met with Trump’s Commerce Secretary.
He called Trump.
Hours after that, Trump announced he would block the new bridge. The opening was set for June 12. It got canceled the day before. The bridge sits there finished and empty.
Now here is the part that should make every taxpayer angry.
Canada paid for the entire bridge.
Every dollar. And the United States already owns half of it for free. Trump is holding up a bridge we got for nothing, to protect a donor who wrote him a check, while picking a fight with our closest ally and biggest trading partner.
This is corruption in plain sight.
A billionaire pays, and the President delivers. American workers and businesses pay the price.
Open the bridge. A government should work for the people, not for whoever writes the biggest check.

New concerns are emerging about President Trump’s sweeping pardon of Jan. 6 defendants after a report found that nearly 100 of them have been arrested, charged or convicted of additional crimes since the attack in 2021.
It comes as continuing efforts by Trump and his allies to recast the events of that day have reignited debate over accountability and the rule of law.
@ElizLanders has more.
Atlantic Industrial Coating reportedly got a no-bid contract to renovate the Reflecting Pool, and charged a 20% profit margin that added at least $850K to taxpayers' bill.

Up to $5.7 trillion a year in environmental damage is tied to the world’s highest-consuming 10%, with biodiversity loss making up the largest share. @UniofOxford https://t.co/IXLbCmMUeB
Appreciation is due here to appropriators Lisa Murkowski, Jerry Moran, and Jeff Merkley, who were very helpful in this important course correction.
Sometimes bipartisanship resurfaces, as it did on offshore wind and on DOD solar blockade.

UPDATE: Trump is taking another $45 million of taxpayer dollars for his ballroom.
We went from a "taxpayer free" ballroom to costing HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars.
Your costs are rising while he steals everything he can for idiotic vanity projects.
Did you know today is #GlobalWindDay? 👀
It's the perfect time for our team at NWF to celebrate how offshore windmills are producing clean, reliable energy along all three coastlines of the U.S. 🌊
Take a moment today to celebrate the possibilities of wind! 🌬️
Efforts to deal with the aftermath of the Russian strikes are ongoing in Kyiv, as well as in Kharkiv. Last night, the Russians launched more than 60 missiles at the capital alone. In total, 70 missiles and 611 drones were used against Ukraine. As of now, 28 people have been reported injured and four killed in the capital. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. A Russian strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra set the Dormition Cathedral on fire – a church whose history dates back to the 11th century. And this is one of Russia’s most serious crimes against Christian culture to date. The State Emergency Service has already extinguished the fire on the cathedral’s roof. In Kharkiv, the Russians carried out a repeat strike against our rescuers as they were putting out a fire at the site of an earlier strike on an industrial facility. So far, tragically, five people have been confirmed killed. My condolences to all their families and loved ones. Nine people have been injured. In Dnipro, Russia struck the grounds of a railway station, a college, and several enterprises.
Other cities and communities were targeted as well. The Kyiv, Dnipro, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions were also under attack. This is how Russia shows the world its intention to continue the war. It is very important that there be a response from the G7 countries, which are now gathering for their summit – and that this response be decisive and substantive: more pressure on the aggressor and more support for Ukraine’s air defense, especially anti-ballistic capabilities. I thank everyone who is helping us protect lives.
In the year 2026 we should be focusing on how we improve life for working families, reverse climate change and strengthen international law.
Instead, led by Putin, Netanyahu & Trump we see more wars & human suffering and increased spending on weapons of destruction.
Pathetic!
Data centers consume an enormous amount of energy for production, cooling and maintenance.
Michael E. Webber, author of "Power Trip: The Story of Energy," explains what this means for those whose homes are near data centers.

The Trump administration plans to allow companies to mine the deep sea, one of the least explored areas on earth. Seafloor mining could wipe out fragile ocean creatures before scientists even discover them, with far-reaching consequences for an environment we don’t yet fully understand. https://t.co/5hHBYoj4Rq
