The Workshop for the Technical and Expert Validation of #CSOs Early Warning Reporting Guidelines and #CPRM Framework, and the Retraining of the Eastern African Civil Society Network (#ECONet) and the Southern Africa Partnership for the Prevention of Conflict (@SAPPCPEACE) on Early Warning and Organizational Development Index Portals, which started on 6 July 2026, concluded today, in Nairobi, 🇰🇪 with a high note.

The workshop helped in strengthening collaboration between CSOs and the AU and RECs/RMs, and in concretizing the understanding and ownership of the early warning tools and organizational development portals developed for the CSO umbrellas, mostly taking the lessons leatned from the successes of @WANEP_Regional. The stronger these CSO umbrellas become, the more sustained their support will be to the AU and RECs/RMs.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Salvator Nkeshimana @snkeshi, Principal Officer, East and Southern Africa Regional Desk, @AUC_PAPS Department, commended all participants for their active participation and practical recommendations they made. He called for their full implentation so as to collectively prevent conflicts in Africa.

He also extended a warm vote of thanks of the AU to @GIZAfricanUnion for its continued, sustainable, and valuable support to advaning peace, security, and stability in the Continent.

AU Special Envoy to Madagascar, H.E. Mohamed @AmbMedIdriss, was received yesterday by H.E. President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema of the Republic of #Gabon, together with the UN Special Representative, during a joint AU–UN mission to Libreville.

The visit provided an opportunity to draw lessons from Gabon's successful political transition and exchange views on supporting a peaceful, inclusive and successful transition in #Madagascar.

The African Union (AU) Follow-Up Mission to Lesotho has commenced engagements to assess progress made in implementing the recommendations of the 2022 AU Election Observation Mission, while identifying opportunities for continued support to strengthen future electoral processes.

The mission paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations before holding consultations with the Minister of Law and Justice on the country’s ongoing governance, legal and electoral reforms. The delegation also met with representatives of religious institutions and international development partners supporting democracy and democratic governance in Lesotho.

These engagements form part of the AU’s commitment to supporting member states in advancing credible, inclusive and transparent electoral processes, strengthening democratic institutions, and promoting the implementation of electoral reform recommendations.

Amb. Idris briefed the Chairperson on progress on the situation in Madagascar to date, noting the commitment of the authorities in Antananarivo to remain on track towards an inclusive, credible political dialogue, with broad consultations ongoing.

He further reported encouraging economic indicators over the past three months & proposed the establishment of an inter-institutional contact group on Madagascar.

The Chairperson welcomed the briefing, reaffirming the AU’s principled approach to political transitions: respect for a Madagascan-led solution, with the AU accompanying the country through preventive diplomacy & mediation towards a return to full constitutional order, while advocating for sustained engagement by development partners to support economic stability & development.

AU Commission Chairperson strongly condemns terrorist attack on Somali Prison.

The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, strongly condemns the terrorist attack carried out by Al-Shabaab on 4 October 2025, reportedly targeting the Godka Jilow prison in the capital city of Mogadishu, which resulted in the loss of lives and left several others wounded.

The Chairperson presents the African Union's most heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Somalia, especially to the bereaved families, and wishes speedy recovery to those wounded in the attack.

Most importantly, the Chairperson assures the Somali Government of the full solidarity and the unfaltering commitment of the Union, to neutralize the pervasive threat posed by terrorism and violent extremism in Somalia, the Horn of Africa region and the entire continent. The role of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), remains highly pivotal to this counter-terrorism agenda, through working closely with the Somalia Security Forces (SSF) in joint operations, for restoration of peace and stability in Somalia.

The Chairperson also calls on all AU Member States including the Troop and Police Contributing Countries and the broader international community to intensify support to the Federal Republic of Somalia and the AUSSOM to effectively degrade and eliminate Al-Shabaab and other terrorist groups in #Somalia

Chairperson of the African Union Commission welcomes the Signing of the Revised Electoral Framework Agreement in #Somalia.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf @ymahmoudali , welcomes the signing on 25 August 2025 of the agreement on the Revised Electoral Framework between H.E. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of the Federal Republic of Somalia and one political wing of the Salvation Forum, the main Somali opposition alliance, paving the way for the election of the upcoming federal President and Members of Parliament of Somalia.

The Chairperson call on all signatories to the Agreement to proceed with its scrupulous implementation. He urges all Somali stakeholders to extend full support to the consolidation of this political achievement, and to resort to dialogue and consensus in resolving all pending issues in the electoral process.

The Chairperson encourages the international community to continue supporting the democratic and state building process in Somalia in accordance with priorities defined by the Somali institutions.
