It was a great honor to present a special lecture on Posterior Retrosternal Goiters at the 19th Congress of the Asian Association of Endocrine Surgeons earlier today.

These goiters can lead to symptoms by compressing adjacent structures, including the trachea (causing breathing difficulties), esophagus (resulting in swallowing challenges), and great vessels (triggering facial congestion or palpitations). The diagnosis is usually confirmed through imaging techniques like CT scans or MRI, which help evaluate the goiter’s size, location, and anatomical impact.

Surgical excision remains the primary treatment, particularly for symptomatic cases or those causing significant compression. The approach may range from a standard cervical (neck) incision to more extensive procedures like sternotomy or thoracotomy, depending on the goiter’s substernal extension and complexity. The surgical approach for Posterior Retrosternal Goiters can be complex and difficult. The decision depends on the individual case and the various types. More important is the surgeon’s experience that makes the difference
