@DrLauraHuey @carinaoreilly So what I’m saying is “is CHI good” is the wrong question. It’s should be “is CHI better than what most police forces use now”. That answer is clearly yes. Is CHI as good as an index weighted on actual societal harm? No but since we don’t have one yet, that’s a flawed comparison.

@DrLauraHuey @carinaoreilly Absolutely, but like democracy, we have to accept least worst option. CHI has flaws 100% but is still vastly superior to crime count, especially for the purpose of crime and hot spot mapping. Rejecting CHI is letting perfection be the enemy of the good.

@carinaoreilly @DrLauraHuey I’m not sure I agree the harm is the same. Knowing your family member was killed in a terrible accident (industrial homicide, culpable driving) is surely less traumatic than knowing they were deliberately murdered. The sentencing reflects that, and so then would the index.

@DrLauraHuey What’s the down side to crime severity index though? Even if people do know murder is worse than burglary, surely representing that in a severity weighted format is at least harmless and at best helpful?

@DrLauraHuey I’d like to see a crime harm index based on actual harm rather than sentences or sentencing guidelines. I’m not convinced that a burglary of an empty house is more serious than an unprovoked ABH assault, but in my jurisdiction the burglary sentence is higher.

Victim-led vs pro-charge?

@BarclayNicholas @Brick_Cop @metpoliceuk Houses often have multiple occupants. Who are you entering to arrest and why them vs another occupant? Plus you can’t search the house under that entry power. If the pods aren’t in plain sight you still don’t recover them. Sounds like a complaint waiting to happen.

@YorkshireSgt At its core, the TBL is about togetherness, support & shared appreciation of the work we do that nobody else understands. Unfortunately tho TBL is too often misused to circle the wagons & defend the indefensible in the name of solidarity. That has burnt the brand.

@consult_a_crim Cars are stolen with keys everyday. Gaining access to vehicle keys is a “key” driver of burglary rates. Nothing to do with organised crime.

@consult_a_crim Well yes in the case of personal drug use, but other behaviours are criminalised for a reason. I guess you could make stealing cars legal and nobody would be in prison for it, or better you could keep it illegal and help people to not steal cars.

@trandel @bytimbaker @EnergyWrapAU @AmyRemeikis Schools and roads maybe (though freeways etc are often federally supported) but hospital operating costs are funded via Medicare, and the pension and welfare systems are both federally funded, are they not?

@ThomasJonoBale @JBick21 @AmyRemeikis Surely, not withstanding any improvements police need to make in many areas, the debate of such issues should be factual? How do ever reach a place of evidence-informed consensus when false information is allowed to go unchecked?
