@jonawils And won't they just sue under human rights violation? If it is seized who decides who sells it, and for how much? For context of seizing multibillion £ city, this is how tories are describing temporarily making crap prs homes into council homes... https://t.co/NT2JDy1HE1
@jonawils Genuine question: what happens if city are demoted/expelled to the owners? I know they can be stripped of ownership but city is a multibillion £ asset they'd have to sell at a cut price/be stripped of. Who would buy a league 2 city with years of point deductions and transfer ban?
Council chiefs in Bristol changed the rules to allow developers to build without having to include any ‘affordable’ homes at all - just eight weeks after being asked to at a meeting with one of the city’s biggest developers.

Council housing works. Salford has proved it, building hundreds of new council homes despite years of austerity.
Now let's give Councils the powers and funding to build at scale. We need genuinely affordable social rent, with homes kept in public hands for generations.
@DavidDPaxton David. It is not. Look at LHA rates. It doesn't cover rent. Ppl top up with other benefits. If you are annoyed at cost of housing benefit, look at lack of social housing and landlords hiking up rents? £13bn a year to private landlords.
@GeoffNorcott It doesn't SEEM radical Geoff. But, look at LHA rates. They do not cover rents as it is. Cutting housing benefits = more homelessness. So you soend MORE on emergency accommodation. You get that, right?
🚨 WATCH: This is such a breath of fresh air.
Badenoch: cut welfare to pay for defence.
@andyburnham : yes, bring the welfare bill down, by tackling WHY it is so high.
Build council homes instead of paying billions in housing benefit to cover expensive rents. Help young people into education and work instead of abandoning them.
Fix the problem, don’t punish the people suffering from it.
This is what “problem-solving not point-scoring” actually looks like.
@forestmad80 Tough decisions about spending less is fine. This proposal would mean spending more on worse accommodation. Unless you cut housing benefit and also change the law around council's obligations on homelessness e.g. housing homeless children.
@aliciakearns You know cutting housing benefit means MORE expensive homelessness accommodation. You'd 'save money' by spending more. If you want to get elected, you have to get serious, please!
@danny__kruger Mate. Cutting housing benefit will end up costing government much more in very expensive homelessness emergency accommodation. You'd be 'saving money' by spending more. Not to mention how bad homelessness accommodation is for the people in it. Grow up.
I grew up in a council home, so I know just how important they are.
With £6 billion in funding for more affordable homes, we can transform the lives of thousands of Londoners across our city ⬇️
The Conservatives have proposed banning foreign nationals from taking social housing if they return to government.
But do their numbers add up to a fix to the shortage?

It’s vital that existing social housing stock is allocated fairly and efficiently to those most in need.
But we know these proposals would not improve how social housing is allocated.
Why? Because when the Tories consulted on them in early 2024, extensive feedback made clear that they would not only fail to deliver any meaningful improvements to the allocation of social housing but would cost a fortune, increase the numbers of people in expensive temporary accommodation, and risk harm to communities.
Eligibility for social housing is already tightly controlled. If a person’s visa means that they cannot access state benefits or local authority housing assistance, they are not eligible for social housing.
While the Tories spew out unserious and unworkable gimmicks as they descend further down the Reform rabbit hole, this Labour government is working to undo the engineered decline of social housing they facilitated by once again building social and council homes at scale.

No amount of headline-chasing, or following Reform to the extremes, can conceal the damage the Tories did to housing in this country.
People without ILR are already ineligible for social housing, so the Tories are targeting refugees and long-term UK residents who have contributed to this country but are not British citizens, including NHS staff.
It would leave more families at risk of homelessness, while driving up the use of temporary accommodation at taxpayers’ expense.
This unserious, unworkable proposal, copied from Reform, would do nothing to tackle the housing crisis the Tories themselves created.

'What if they can't afford private rents?'
'Then they can figure it out.'
The Tories want to evict foreign nationals from council houses. @BenKentish confronts think tank director Robert Bates on the policy.
