The hardest part of my new piercing is that its hard to see if its angry/leaky because I cant contort into a position that let's me get a good look at it... I cant get the angle lol.

Disagree with Holly here, its not "better or worse". Its like doing leg extensions in the gym versus leg curls. Different exercises, but still working leg muscles and improving brain health. Reading is reading and I do recommend trying new book experiences but+

i think the argument is simply:

reading actual literature is better for your brain than fanfic. but reading fanfic is better for your brain than reading nothing at all

@fengduoyin Twitter is cursed... Every week theres some new discourse its either gen AI fics or how RPF is the devil or ... this current book vs fic debate. Oh I forgot to mention the censorship police who argue about what should and shouldn't be on ao3 and proship stuff 😑

@fengduoyin plus, lots of people beta read or use checkers like grammarly so the quality isnt utterly abysmal, bht at the end of the day its all for fun and fanfic, unlike books, is about community too, its a different experience to books. Both have their merits

@fengduoyin Yup, finding a good quality fanfic writer + binging their works isnt too far removed from reading a whole series by a trad pub author you like. W fanfic, there are a lot of amateurs and its a fun hobby so quality can vary A LOT, but theres some truly remarkable stuff there too.

@fengduoyin Literature is SO SUBJECTIVE, like, even looking at "publit", there isnt an objective standard of whats good and what's not. Some trash sells well some masterpieces gather dust. It is by no means a useful metric to judge the quality of works

Personally, Ive found a smaller publisher I like, and I enjoy translates books from this one bookstore near my work and it reliably stocks unique stories! So long as you enjoy, it doesn't matter what youre reading or where it came from

@wonietoon YES! I read a book on my lunch break and before bed (because I want my eyes to have a rest from screens). If I have time in the afternoon and during weekends, I read or write fic too even within the same day!

when fanfic is not the only thing most people in fandoms are reading (leading to an overall lower level of critical thinking and literacy) + when fanfic stops being funneled into the traditional publishing pipeline maybe we’ll be nicer about it

so read fanfic, read the classics, read nonfiction; read things that go down easily and things that are harder to digest
