โ๏ธ๐๏ธAnnual symposium with students and faculty to promote NLP research in the (Southern) California region ๐ฉโ๐ป #SoCalNLP2023 ๐ @ucla, posts by @BrihiJ
@socalnlp Thank you organizers! Especially @qinyuan_ye@christinachanc@MMonajatipoor@BrihiJ@Wade_Yin9712
Behind-the-scenes student organizers don't get as much time to enjoy the amazing networking, sharing, and learning opportunities that their own volunteering enables!
Thank you all!
Thank you to everyone who attended SoCal NLP 2023 at UCLA today. We are thrilled to have over 250 participants and 151 posters from universities across Southern California and beyond. A special shout-out to all the volunteers who made this possible!
๐๏ธAnd thatโs a wrap! Thank you everyone for travelling or driving to Los Angeles/@ucla and #SoCalNLP2023! It was a fun day with great discussions, networking and some gossip strewn in from recent news ๐คญ
See you all next year!!!
That concludes #SoCalNLP2023! Thank you to everyone who stopped by our posters, and great job to the organizers @socalnlp! We are honored to have had this opportunity to share our work.

Our last speaker, Dan Roth, talked about understanding how LLMs *reason* (+ how defining reasoning in this age is very complex!)
Fun Part? ๐ Dan shows how LLMs are still not able to plan and reason, by showing how LLMs are not able to address LAโs parking situation ๐จ
Next, we have the amazing @tatsu_hashimoto, talking about how to probe and understand black-box LMs better! ๐๐ผ
What we loved? How @tatsu_hashimoto highlighted that we know *very* little about these LLMs that we love and use ๐ค

Our amazing next speaker @alsuhr talked about continual learning in language grounded scenarios ๐ค๐ถ๐ฝ
Best part? The amazing demo with @alsuhr collaborating with an agent to play CerealBar ๐ค
Our next speaker @xiangrenNLP talked about how models and humans are good are different tasks, and we can try to get the best out of them! ๐ค๐ฆพ๐๐ผ
What we loved? How @xiangrenNLP added his research wishlist to the talk!
According to https://t.co/WfQAW31jTP, this is the most concentrated NLP summit ever!
SoCal NLP publications easily outnumber any other university by a factor of two!
