#OTD 1926: Three Italian Fascists died when a bomb exploded in their car near East 116th Street and First Avenue in East Harlem. The Fascists were about to attack an anti-Fascist rally, featuring labor activist Luigi Quintiliano, anarchist Carlo Tresca and Enea Sormenti, head of Communist Party’s Italian federation. Police initially tried to cover up the explosion, blaming a mechanical problem.

The failed attack was part of violent campaign by Fascists against Italian leftists in New York. In November, ten Fascists raided offices of Socialist paper Il Nuovo Mondo and Tresca’s Il Martello on East 10th Street, breaking windows, damaging linotype machines, and beating employees. A few days later, one hundred Fascists, some armed, attacked three anti-Fascists in daylight on West 45th Street.

This campaign of terror was aided by Italian diplomats and supported by sympathetic cops. It culminated in the arrest of two anti-Fascist garment workers, Donato Carillo and Calogero Greco, for murder of two black-shirted Fascists at 183rd Street Elevated Station in the Bronx on Memorial Day 1927.

Although the two members of the clothing workers’ union were in Brooklyn at the time of the killing, they were put on trial for homicide, facing electric chair. The International Labor Defense, Communist Party, and Tresca organized a united-front labor-centered campaign to defend the pair, leading to their being acquitted in December 1927.

Today is #LaborDay in the United States, a national holiday since 1894. While rest of the world celebrates the First of May to commemorate the international working class, union tops in U.S. long ago disowned #MayDay as tainted by radicalism.

Instead pro-capitalist labor leadership uses Labor Day to promote patriotism and highlight class collaboration, especially support to capitalist Democratic Party. Workers and leftists must learn about history of working class in the United States and internationally.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the strike, when some 15,000 wool workers in New Jersey—largely immigrants and women—fought for more than a year under communist leadership for better conditions, higher wages, and a union. In court today, after 20 months of torment in NYC prison, Luigi Mangione confessed to killing the United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
At the time of his death, Thompson's hands were drenched with the blood of so many victims who died of his systematic healthcare denials. This is why so many workers celebrated his death, a fact which drives the ruling class crazy. The killing was counterproductive, but NOT a crime in the eyes of the working class.
These articles explain how individual violence is inexpedient; there is no substitute for working class struggle to expropriate the healthcare parasites.

#OTD 1871, Karl Liebknecht born. Leader of revolutionary wing of German socialism, opposed the imperialist war, founder of German Communist Party. Along with Rosa Luxemburg, was murdered in 1919 on behest of SPD. Revolutionaries today should study Liebknecht's struggle, writings.
