Colombo’s Fort and suburbs during Portuguese rule could boast of more than a dozen imposing churches. Many were built in the Renaissance style prevailing in 16-17th century Europe. One of the outstanding architectural features of the larger churches was the erection of a bell tower (campanella) to house the church bells that were rung to call the faithful to worship. Three bronze bells from the Portuguese are known to have survived the vicissitudes of times; wars, sieges and other upheavals – of these one bell has been hard to locate and verify its fate.
