my thesis is that the main axis of power in the ai economy will be ownership of compute capacity.

those who already control large pools of compute, or the capital that brings that compute into existence, operate from a fundamentally different position. they get to decide when to deploy, where to deploy, and what gets to scale. their choices shape which products can exist at all.

those without that access live under a constant constraint. “building” increasingly means negotiating prices, switching providers, compressing workloads, and adjusting ambition to infrastructure limits. even good ideas are bent by what can be afforded, not what would be ideal. as more teams compete for the same resources, the fight shifts from product quality to cost efficiency.

we like to describe this moment as one of limitless creativity powered by ai. in practice, it looks more like a return to an energy economy, just expressed digitally. compute is starting to behave like oil or gold: not just an input, but a source of leverage. whoever controls its circulation will end up setting the tempo of innovation.
