Col A P Nanda, the first proud Indian Bombay Sapper Officer, served as Commandant of BEG & Centre Kirkee from 07 Feb 1948 to 14 Nov 1948.

Today, 07 Feb 2026, we commemorate his historic takeover with a wreath laying ceremony at his Samadhi on the banks of River Mula. We remember late Col A P Nanda, who led the Bombay Sappers through post-Independence challenges with vision and resolve—celebrating his enduring legacy and our proud annual tradition.

On this day in 1948, we honour Col Anand Prakash Nanda, the first Indian Commandant of the Bombay Sappers Centre, who tragically died in harness. Born in Rawalpindi in 1912, trained at RMA Woolwich, commissioned in 1933, he became the first Indian Adjutant of the Corps in 1941, commanded 29 (R.B.) Field Company, and assumed command of the Centre on 7 Feb 1948. His leadership, integrity and quiet courage shaped generations of Sappers.
A solemn Samadhi at Holkar Bridge, Khadki, stands in his memory.
A legacy that continues to inspire.
