Hey GI Fellows,
As you navigate through your fellowship, remember that this is where you lay the foundation for your career. Here's some advice from someone who's been in the GI game for a while:
1. Network, Network, Network:
- Attend conferences like the one I recently enjoyed at #ACG2024, #TSGE2024, #DDW2024. Not only do you learn the latest from the field, but you also connect with mentors, peers, and future colleagues. Remember, those connections you make at GI Jeopardy or the post-graduate course might be the ones who help you with a job offer or a research collaboration down the line.
2. Master Your Craft:
- Learn from Every Case: Each scope you do is a learning opportunity. Whether it's a routine colonoscopy or a complex ERCP, there's always something to pick up.
- Stay Calm: When things get tricky inside the GI tract, take a breath. Panicking won't help you or the patient. A calm endoscopist is a good endoscopist.
- Technique Over Speed: Yes, efficiency matters, but accuracy and safety come first. Your technique will improve your speed naturally over time.
- Documentation is Key: Ensure your reports are thorough. Good documentation can save you in the long run and improve patient care.
3. Professionalism Beyond Procedures:
- Be a Physician, Not a "Provider": I've said it before, and I'll say it again, refer to yourself as a physician. It encompasses the comprehensive care you provide beyond just procedures and also signifies the educational foundation of your title.
- Stay Updated: Medicine evolves rapidly. Regularly review journals, attend webinars, and if you can, contribute to research. It keeps you sharp and relevant.
4. Patient Interaction:
- Build rapport with your patients. A good bedside manner can make a huge difference. They remember how you made them feel.
5. Self-Care:
- Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Take care of your mental and physical health. The long hours in the endoscopy suite can be taxing.
6. Teach and Learn:
- If you have residents or students under you, teach them well. Teaching is learning. Plus, explaining things clearly reinforces your own knowledge.
Lastly, enjoy the journey. Each patient, each procedure, each conference is a step in your professional growth. Keep your curiosity alive, and never stop questioning or learning – it's what makes us better doctors.
To the next generation of GI specialists: Here's to making a positive impact, one gut at a time! 🥂
