This morning I received the French Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Arnaud Suquet, and the German Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Sebastian Groth, at my residence. It was a good, honest conversation.

We spoke plainly about where Kenya stands. The violence we continue to witness is a concern to all of us, and I told the Ambassadors as much that this is not the Kenya we should be building. Peace and the rule of law are not things we can afford to negotiate on.

Much of our conversation kept coming back to the IEBC. If Kenyans are to have confidence in their elections, the Commission has to be independent in practice, not just on paper. That is the foundation everything else is built on, and it is a conversation we must keep having, honestly and without fear.

We also talked about the long relationship Kenya has with France and Germany; friendships that go back many years, and that matter now more than ever. Democracy is not sustained by one country alone. It needs partners who are willing to engage honestly, even when the conversation is difficult.

I thank the Ambassadors for coming, and for a conversation that was open and direct. These are the discussions Kenya needs right now.
