Nihal Sarin dominates the 2026 Bullet Chess Championship 🏆
He made history with an INSANE 15 GAME WIN STREAK against 3x champ Alireza Firouzja to win back-to-back matches 🔥🔥
WAKE UP AIFF! Stop enjoying the FIFA World Cup 2026 free trip. @KhelNow
The FIFA World Cup 2030 qualifiers begin in March 2027, and India is currently just one position away from dropping into Round 1.
For those unaware, Round 1 is essentially a knockout playoff between the lowest-ranked teams in Asia. Lose that tie and your World Cup campaign is over before it has even properly started.
India are currently ranked 138 in the FIFA rankings. The closest AFC nations behind them are Turkmenistan (141), Yemen (145) and Singapore (148). All three are currently in the Round 1 bracket. If any of them overtake India in the rankings over the coming months, #IndianFootball could be heading towards a nightmare scenario.
Meanwhile, the rest of Asia is already preparing for the qualifiers. Malaysia have overhauled their coaching and technical setup. Bangladesh are actively expanding their pool of diaspora players. Other nations are planning months ahead. What exactly is India's plan?
🚨 @amofficialCRIS has successfully destroyed the RailOne app.
Used to book Tatkal tickets flawlessly earlier vs Now? Fails every single time and this is happening since weeks, not one successful TQ booking.
The irony? IRCTC Rail Connect is now MORE reliable now than the "upgraded" solution. 💀
Sir @AshwiniVaishnaw@RailMinIndia what happened to all those big claims about RailOne?
Didn't even survive a year. 📉
It was a beautiful start to the year 2026 for Nihal Sarin. The youngster from Kerala won the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid 2026 with a clear half point ahead of the field scoring 6.5/9. Nihal performed at an Elo of 2839 and won games against Aravindh, Niemann, Murzin, Vidit and Wesley So.
Nihal after winning the tournament, dedicated his win to his maternal grandfather AA Ummar, who passed away yesterday. It was extremely tough for Nihal, as his grandfather was the one who had taught him chess. He played today's games thinking about him.
Vishy Anand, the legend of Indian chess, finished sole second with 6.0/9. The third place went to 3 players Arjun Erigaisi, Wesley So, Hans Niemann - all of whom finished with 5.0/9.
Nihal's victory is very special because just a week before the event, he was not even in the list of participants. It was only when the World Champion D. Gukesh pulled out from the event, that Nihal got a chance to play here. And he made the chance count by winning with an amazing performance. Whenever Nihal wins, we are reminded that "Kind and good people do not always finish last! In fact they can even finish ahead of everyone else!"
Kudos to the Champ!

Nihal Sarin on Kramnik after Daniel Naroditsky's death
"I cannot process how messed up some of these minds are. What do you get from ruining anyone’s life? Now, (Kramnik is) almost directly responsible for taking one."
My story for @IExpressSports

The Naroditsky family shares the sad news of Daniel’s unexpected passing. Daniel was a talented chess player, educator, and beloved member of the chess community. We ask for privacy as the family grieves.

What a lineup in the US National Chess Championship!
For over two decades, most chess players in India have dreamed of a closed National Championship where the top players compete for the National title!
It is unfortunate that we have not come up with a format (which every Indian chess player knows - the biggest open secret in Indian chess) that encourages and incentivises top players to play in India.
India is the strongest chess-playing nation in the world, with the weakest National Championship.
As per Grok," Overall, fewer than 10–15 norms are estimated to have been earned in India across all 89 GMs (less than 5% of the total), with the remaining 250+ achieved abroad in tournaments across Europe, the Middle East, and Asia (e.g., in Spain, France, UAE, and Greece). This trend has intensified with India's chess boom, as players increasingly travel for norm opportunities."
The current reality is that, to meet GM norms and participate in high-quality tournaments, Indians have to travel abroad. The Indian open tournaments where you can make norms are few and far, and more importantly, cleverly designed in a manner that only an exceptional performance can make a norm. The organisers allow lower-rated players to participate in large numbers by charging a very high entry fee, which compromises the quality of the event.
So much can be done easily to improve Indian chess by the system. Regular training camps, Indian Chess league, decent conditions (not the greedy "good conditions") for National Championships, Strong open tournaments with a rating cutoff to make IM/GM norms, etc.
All these were demands of chess players for at least 2.5 decades. I hope that, in my lifetime, at least one or two of these will become a reality.
Nihal, i know its tough, it was a brilliant game!! Stunned Firouzja from start untill the end, it happens. There's 2 more. To fight, To win, To glory.

The Kerala Premier Chess League (KPCL) 2025 starts tomorrow in Thiruvananthapuram! 14 teams will compete in India's highest prize money chess league. With a prize fund of ₹25 lakh, the winning team will take home ₹10 lakh. Each team will have 20 players & 5 reserve players.
Kudos Nihal! More to Come. From prodigy to SuperGM. There's only a narrow gap to cover. Time is there, talent is there. Wishes for a great year. Chennai GM, Grand swiss, World cup. 🏅✨️
