Google Chrome is quietly downloading a roughly 4 GB AI model to many usersโ computers without clear upfront consent.
The file, called weights.bin, is part of Googleโs Gemini Nano on-device language model and lands in the browserโs user data folder under OptGuideOnDeviceModel.
It powers built-in AI tools such as โHelp me write,โ smarter tab suggestions, on-device scam detection, and page summarization. The download triggers automatically for devices meeting minimum hardware requirements, and Chrome often replaces the files if deleted.
While the model processes data locally, installation happens in the background with minimal notification.
The scale is noteworthy. Hundreds of millions or billions of installations add up to thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions globally from data transfer, even though each is a one-time event.
To prevent or remove it, go to chrome://flags, disable the entries for the optimization guide on-device model and Prompt API, restart the browser, and manually delete the folder.
@Dailymeoww1@ChaosCatHokpzo Can I say something unpopular?
Homing stray cats is noble, but TNR + rehoming is creating a situation where rodents are starting to fester in large cities. We can't & shouldn't remove all the feral cats off the streets even if we love them. We need to keep a population viable.
@GunGnome Meanwhile in Vancouverโฆ If you plant a tree, you can't remove it without heavy fines and/or planting another one. Sometimes you can't even remove it without permission from your neighbour. ๐ณ
@RasmussenT56381 I give you permission to put in beef bread. ๐
(Because it's not my recipe anyhow. KetoWoman's โ but we're in the same Province, I'm just spreading her words.)
Today, I unlocked Beef Bread. #recipe
Yes it's soft like a real bread.
3 ingredients only (4 actually, but more on that later)
- beef
- eggs
- baking soda
When extracting uranium from ore, one of the acids commonly used in hobbyist chemistry to separate uranium from its ore is muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid), which is also the primary acid found in your stomach that helps digest food.
Because of this if you eat uranium, your stomach acid can actually increase the amount available for absorption and the uranium can still be absorbed through the digestive tract (typically only about 0.2โ2% enters the bloodstream, while roughly 98โ99.8% is usually excreted).
Really, it is not the radiation from uraniumโs decay products that makes uranium that dangerous to eat, the primary concern is the actual chemical toxicity as a heavy metal and particularly its potential effects on the kidneys. โข๏ธ
@CaryKelly11@RedGhostLover Even my compost is smaller. Mostly bones, egg shells and paper towels. ๐ I seem to have found a way to eat everything else (tendons and all). (I made a bunch of eggshell powder but haven't been able to use it very fast.)
