IMO I think this could very well be a factor for many groups at risk of elevated rates of chronic pain - queer/trans, CALD, POC - individuals who often experience similar fear and hypervigilance in public spaces. Would love to see more research investigating this.

We know rates of chronic pain in women are higher, but given what we know about the link between trauma and pain, my question is: have we ever considered whether this could be explained by the near constant hypervigilance required to stay safe while simply existing as a woman?

Of course the link between specific traumatic events and risk of pain is well documented - I’m referring more to the more pervasive, constant “high alert” state women are forced to be in due to ever present risk of harassment, violence or assault.

@freefromrulers @hsk2 @sensorystories_ Then I am glad that your experience was different to that of many others. I know many people who would jump at the chance to be properly assessed but the services/referral pathways either don’t exist or are cost prohibitive (in Aus, often thousands of $).
