Can algorithms be biased? How can careless software harm our societies? We want you to join the conversation, so we built an educational game. Try it out here: https://t.co/NgQGNGykTJ
You can expect from us both rigorous research and interactive experiences (such as ones we've worked on before: https://t.co/pCA8M36uGz, https://t.co/MiCcrGGNR7).
The research will inform the public-facing work, the public-facing work will inform the research.
Really excited to share that @lujainmibrahim & I were awarded a @RTyouthpower grant to build up @DeciferStudio, a research & design studio critically demystifying emerging tech for broad audiences!
In The Algorithm, we aim to break down how recommendation systems work in algorithmically-curated feeds, like TikTok, to a broader audience with no assumed technical background.

Excited to launch @lujainmibrahim & I's @Mozilla Creative Media Award project, The Algorithm, built with @b1sabel, @Andy_Makes, and @gasilveira. Check it out!

In Kenosha, Wisconsin, 43% of Black ninth graders were labeled “high risk” of dropping out by an algorithm.
Just 11% of White ninth graders got that same label.
Every student in the state gets a risk score before high school. With @Chalkbeat: https://t.co/aV7AE4IPVZ
Super excited that @aliaelkattan and I have been awarded a @mozilla Creative Media Award to build “The Algorithm,” an interactive simulation to demystify algorithmically-curated feeds and the recommender systems that power them https://t.co/S24lmXmvxZ
🚨An investigation by @LHreports and @WIRED looked into an algorithm in #Rotterdam used to detect welfare fraud. The results are extremely troubling--the sophisticated algorithm is deeply flawed and discriminatory

Members of Twitter's ethical AI team learned they had been laid off early this morning, according to tweets by those affected.
Twitter's ML Ethics, Transparency & Accountability team has been responsible for studying algo decisionmaking, building AI fairness tools & more. (1/6)
No one I'd rather be spotlighted next to for the @TheWebbyAwards + @OmidyarNetwork's Responsible Tech trend report than @lujainmibrahim, check out https://t.co/Eiz1egjSWe if you haven't!!
As part of a special initiative with @OmidyarNetwork, we've unveiled brand new honors for #ResponsibleTechnology to celebrate global efforts that are mitigating harms online — and to inspire our community to create work in more responsible ways.
AI bias research has ironically made it easier to produce overhyped AI journalism, because reporters can just mention "concerns" about bias and bothsides the issue without having to exercise any skepticism about whether the AI tool actually works and why it's even being created.
This project is about the bias and motivated reasoning that bad data teaches an AI. The impact of this, however, is abstract. How can we view weighted judgement? What does a poorly trained model look like? In short, it looks like Are You The Asshole. /8
I'm happy to announce the new project @goodtweetsalex and I have worked on for the past month: https://t.co/60IZF1pwwO! It's everything you like about Reddit's r/AmITheAsshole sub on AI-powered steroids and will tell you all the reasons you are - and aren't! - the asshole. /1
