Stranded and Ignored: A Nightmare Journey with Qatar Airways
@qatarairways@MofaQatar_EN@qrsupport@AskDrShashank@banshisaboo@ShashiTharoor
My wife, and I recently attended the Pan Arab Society for Interventional Endocrinology and Diabetes Technology (PASID) Annual conference in Egypt and were returning home via Qatar Airways. Our journey included a flight from Cairo to Doha (QR 1304 on 27 July 2024) followed by a connecting flight from Doha to Trivandrum (QR 506 at 7:10 pm).
Our troubles began when the Cairo flight took off half an hour late due to a power failure, eventually departing at 2:33 pm instead of 2:10 pm. Upon approaching Doha, the captain announced a missed landing, forcing the plane to ascend and finally land at 6:03 pm instead of the scheduled 5:15 pm. This delay left us with just over an hour to catch our connecting flight. We were constantly enquiring the crew while inside the flight but were assured assistance while landing and will never miss the connection since it’s the same Qatar airways.
Upon landing, we faced additional delays. No aerobridge! Only shuttle bus! We waited 20 minutes to disembark, and 15 minutes for the shuttle bus to reach the terminal, getting us inside the airport at 6:37 pm. We requested assistance from Qatar Airways staff but were directed only to the gate. Despite our efforts to rush through the airport, including running, taking a train, navigating escalators, and going through security again, we arrived at the gate at 6:59 pm to find it closed. We sat there for a while panting and gasping for breath.
At the help desk, after waiting 30 minutes in line, we were directed to another transfer desk. There, Anthony, who patiently listened to us, contacted his manager. The manager refused to provide a hotel room, stating we missed the flight by 1 hour and 4 minutes, just over their 1-hour compensation threshold. I argued that we landed late and had only 30 minutes to reach our next flight, but they remained unyielding.
Qatar Airways offered to book us a flight to Kochi instead of Trivandrum, leaving us to arrange the rest of the journey. Our request for lounge access and food was also denied and we waited for another 5 hours in the middle of the night for Kochi flight. The fact that our 2 checked-in bags were still in the airport, again confirms the fact that even Qatar airways couldn’t transfer the bags within that 15 minutes at a very far away destination!!
This experience raised questions about Qatar Airways' management and logistics. Why provide such an impractical itinerary with gates so far apart and no assistance?
I am a Qatar Airways Privilege Club member for over 20 years, and this ordeal highlights the need for better coordination and support from the airline.
For a reputed fast growing airline, it’s urgent to identify the irresponsible manager and immediately fire her/him to save the reputation and avoid future damages.
I request an inquiry and seek compensation for the physical and mental stress caused. We had to pay for a hotel in Kochi and flights back home, losing precious 23 hours, severely exhausted due to Qatar Airways' failures. Missed my important appointments and meetings.
The total time lost due to Qatar Airways' gross mistakes include:
1. Delay in takeoff: 23 minutes (2:33 pm instead of 2:10 pm). Delay in landing: 48 minutes (6:03 pm instead of 5:15 pm).
2. Waiting inside the aircraft after landing: 20 minutes.
3. Shuttle bus travel time to terminal: 15 minutes.
4. Time taken to navigate to the gate: approximately 22 minutes (6:37 pm to 6:59 pm).
Total time lost: 1 hour and 48 minutes.
It is unreasonable to expect anyone to reach Gate C61 at the far end, from the shuttle bus drop-off point in 5 or 10 minutes. I request a thorough explanation, an inquiry into the staff's actions, and appropriate compensation for our ordeal.
This tragedy was completely avoidable with more responsible actions from the crew and manager.
