@MotzieD criticism is a skill within itself. none of these awful takes provide any resources or genuine advice on how someone can improve their work. it’s literally just people going “this is why i don’t like blank” or “authors need to stop doing this” or “suck it up, get thicker skin” ??
@MotzieD thank you 😭 someone said i was “asserting authority” when all i implied was that even with my knowledge of writing and literature it’s not at all my place to judge or offer criticism toward somebody’s FREE writing in a medium as lax as fanfiction when they explicitly didn’t ask
Genuinely if I want to upgrade my writing, I'll look for professional literature on the matter with well established practices and advice from editors and writers.
Why the heck would I want an "advice" which, 8 times out of 10, is a badly veiled insult from a rando I don't know.
cant say shit abt fanfic unless its positive n damn near dick sucking levels of glaze, cant tweet shit mildly critical or negative to the void on your personal acc bc god forbid youll hurt someones feelings n make them not wanna write
Actually since I’m irritated I am going to continue to speak on it.
The reason fanfic writers aren’t receptive to your “general advice” on twitter is because you don’t understand how to teach at all.
Learning can come from anywhere.
Teaching requires a relationship.
@Eraserho3 !!! english is a difficult language to master & i’m still learning new things every day. it’s inspiring thing to see ppl with different native languages be so passionate in bringing a story to life they’re willing to challenge themselves. that is the dedication of a true writer.
i have a masters degree in english literature and i understand wanting people to improve their craft but not everyone wants to it’s a hobby it’s playing with dolls no one intends to be the next shakespeare these are stories written for free and for fun it’s not a literacy crisis
@RADIOSCR3AMS don’t let anyone discourage you!!! i just checked your ao3 and i’d love to one day be as prolific as you are with your work!!! (btw i just became the 100th kudo on your house/wilson fic 💅) you’ve got taste ✨
the worst writing advice deals in absolutes. "never use adverbs." "show, don’t tell." "no italics" almost nothing is that simple. the real question is whether the choice does what you want it to and whether you understand why
@Winterteacup23 like poor writing isn’t a crime WHO CARES i spend my life eyeball deep in classic literature sometimes a grammatically awful fic written with passion is the cigarette i need after a long day it truly isn’t that serious for a fellow author to be calling other people’s work “slop”
@WIP_Abandoned well according to this and based on my quick skim of your ao3 your work could follow this advice but this is just my # unsolicited criticism...yet your stuff is still good. I truly could care less about someone's "slop" it's so easy to click off a bad fic

@Stardust_Heart i’ve received the same advice! and even then you will STILL have someone who doesn’t like your work, no matter if it’s the most profound piece of writing ever put to paper. i had a professor once grade a story i wrote as techncially perfect but they personally didn’t like it.
@StatickyRadio i fear there isn’t enough wood or nails in the world to crucify me for the sins i commit against the english language in text messages tweets and my authors notes
@Nyxx59939102 i have deep respect for history scholars it was my 2nd major alongside english my first ever semester and i had to pivot because my flowery creative prose was NOT at all conductive to analyzing historic texts in essay format! i wish i could be so succinct in conveying information
@archorangejuice it is literally the equivalent of a stubborn professor crucifying someone’s paper with red ink and just writing “no” and “?” in the margins…like who is this helping…thanks for the feedback i guess? didn’t realize we were in the presence of so many new york times best sellers 😭
@gaeadene exactly!! i truly do encourage writers to improve upon their skill as best they can but unsolicited advice helps nobody…anyone can be a critic but it takes true patience and passion to be a teacher! i’d kudos a grammar ridden fic over the work of an entitled complainer any day!!
