初代『METAL SLUG』ミッション２のボス『ヘアバスター リバーツ』は、『紅の豚』に登場する、美少女をさらうことで知られる空賊の大手『マンマユート団』が駆る飛行艇『ダボハゼ』のオマージュなんです。

主人公の『ポルコ・ロッソ』の愛機『サボイアS.21』も素晴らしいデザインなんですが、継ぎ接ぎだらけで生活感のある鈍重な飛行艇『ダボハゼ』に一目惚れしました。
宮崎駿先生が描く、ステキなラフスケッチで見るメカデザインは、何時間でも眺めていられます。

実は『METAL SLUG』の企画の起点は、娘が偶々見ていた宮崎アニメ『名探偵ホームズ』だったんです。

大勢の犬の警官たちが、モリアーティの乗り物に次々と飛びつき、力ずくで取り押さえようとする描写を見て、あの手やこの手で戦車に挑んでくる兵士たちが頭に浮かんだんです。

主人公ではなく、敵側の兵士が演じる、憎みきれないバイプレイヤーの群像劇を作りたかったという、ちょっと変わった着想が『METAL SLUG』の始まりでした。

前々から不思議に思っていたんですが、ラスボスっぽいモーデンが、なぜ２面のボスとして、早々と登場したんだろうと。
６面では案の定、何食わぬ顔でシレッとラスボスとして再登場しています。

『ヘアバスター リバーツ』の墜落事故で、身体のあちこちを高性能なバイオニックに置き換えられ、『600万ドルの男』よろしくサイボーグとして復活したんだよという見た目に変わってるとかだったら、納得したかもしれないんですが、何事もなかったように現れるもんですから、なんだかずっとモヤモヤしているんです。

30年前のお話ですから、細かいことは覚えてないんですが、その記憶を辿ると2面と6面を担当していたスタッフは作業の進み具合がかなり遅く、予定は未定のまま進んでいたと思います。

もしかすると、本来モーデンは２ボスとして作られたキャラで、ラスボスには別のキャラを用意する予定だったのかもしれません。
それが間に合わず、結果的にモーデンが２ボスとラスボスの一人二役を演じることになった…。
そう考えると、『ヘアバスター リバーツ』撃墜後、『フライング・タラ』に救助されるモーデンという変な演出も、辻褄合わせだったのではないかと合点がいきますね。

仕事の遅いスタッフがツギハギしながら何とか形にした姿を想像してしまうんですが、実際のところは結局よく分からず、モヤモヤと迷宮入りです。
