Like a lot of slurs, the word can be used against other groups but it's used in the way of "you're like THOSE ppl (who are bad)" which is Still demeaning and insulting that original group. Which still makes that original group the arbiters of who gets to use/reclaim it.
I mean, high fives to Nate Silver and/or his lawyers for being on top of making sure his creations didn't get dumped in the work-for-hire bucket 10 years ago.
