On October 7, 2023, Israel enacted its controversial Hannibal Directive, killing hundreds of its own citizens. The day started with a cross-border incursion by Hamas and other armed Palestinian groups.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that he gave the order to enact the Hannibal Directive – a massive scorched Earth policy where the IDF struck anything that moved in the area – in order to prevent Hamas from taking more captives. .

Israeli missiles and tanks pounded the area, destroying vehicles and flattening houses in a way the lightly-armed Palestinian fighters could not have. The massive shelling likely killed most of those slain on the day.

Since then, it has used those killed on October 7 as justification for a genocidal campaign against Gaza, and attacks against the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Tunisia, and Yemen.
