Before You Talk About Israel: Eight Things to Know
(1) It was not an “Arab country.”
In 1917 this was not a sovereign Arab nation-state but an Ottoman province with mixed populations—Arabs, Jews, Christians, Druze, Bedouin, Circassians, Armenians, Greeks, and others. Calling it “an Arab country” imposes a later nationalist framing onto a multiethnic administrative district that had never been an Arab state.
(2) Jews were not “dumped down” as aliens.
Jews had lived in the land continuously for thousands of years. Zionism didn’t implant a foreign population; it reassembled an indigenous one whose presence never ceased.
(3) Jewish refugees did not displace Arabs by conquest.
Before statehood, Jewish immigrants weren’t clearing villages by force. They bought land legally—often at high prices—from Arab and Turkish absentee landlords, and built on legally acquired property. The early Yishuv expanded through real estate and agriculture, not expulsion.
(4) Arab displacement happened during wars of annihilation launched by Arab armies.
The major dislocations of Arabs occurred during the wars of 1947–48, 1967, and 1973—wars initiated by surrounding Arab countries whose leaders explicitly sought to destroy the Jewish state. These were not imperial expansionist projects by Israel; they were defensive wars triggered by existential threats. Civilian flight, expulsions, and chaos happened in that context, not because Jews “arrived.”
(5) About 20% of Israel’s citizens today are Arab.
Roughly one-fifth of Israel’s population is Arab—mostly Muslim, with Christian and Druze minorities—with full citizenship, voting rights, legal equality, and representation in parliament. This reality contradicts the claim that Zionism aims to expel Arabs from the land.
(6) Israel has repeatedly traded land won in defensive wars for peace.
After 1967, Israel controlled Sinai, Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. It later returned the entire Sinai Peninsula to Egypt in a land-for-peace treaty and fully withdrew. It did the same with Jordan in 1994. This is not the posture of a state committed to permanent conquest.
(7) Israel has accepted multiple two-state proposals.
From the 1947 UN Partition Plan, to Camp David in 2000, to the Clinton Parameters, to Olmert’s 2008 offer, Israel repeatedly accepted frameworks that would have created a Palestinian state. Palestinian leadership either rejected or let each one collapse.
(8) Israel literally left Gaza in 2005.
In 2005, Israel removed every soldier and every settler from Gaza—dismantling 21 settlements—in a unilateral move intended to create space for peace and Palestinian self-governance. What followed was Hamas’s violent takeover and a permanent rocket war.
The selective outrage is genuinely evil. Even if you believe all the lies about Israel, your obsession comes at the direct expense of every other actual atrocity in the world. Just drummed up a few quick facts without even trying too hard, and this is by no means an exhaustive list:
*In Afghanistan, 28% of women are married before adulthood, with some families offering daughters as young as 20 days old for future marriage in return for a dowry.
*Over 14 million people in Sudan have been displaced by the ongoing civil war, and nearly 25 million face severe food insecurity and famine.
*In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, nearly 45,000 cases of sexual violence against children were reported in 2024 alone.
*In China, over a million Uyghur Muslims have been detained in internment camps, subjected to forced labor, and separated from their children. You want to talk about a state sanctioned genocide, I direct you here.
*In Ukraine, nearly 20,000 children have been abducted by Russia and deported to forced reeducation camps to erase their national identity.
*In Iran, the regime has executed thousands of people over the last few years, using expedited trials and the gallows to silence political dissidents.
But sure, Ireland having a full meltdown over a womens wheelchair basketball game against Israel, or Hollywood line readers standing with Macklemore, an untalented overgrown rapper losing his temporary gig, are truly the pressing human rights issues of our time. By focusing all your social justice warrior energy on one issue, you give a free pass to evil occurring everywhere else. Your moral compass is completely broken, and in doing so, you have broken the world.
I was trying to help famed Gaza photojournalist @PalPress24 create more realistic victims to dupe western progressives, but it turns out he’s a BIGOT. First I reach out offering to meet and assist.🧵1/3
@cwebbonline Most people shouting "Free Palestine" don't give two shits about the actual Palestinians, it's just become a socially acceptable way to express antisemitism and support terrorism. Just a new form of a hatred that is as old as time. Maklemore is just more honest about it than most
@WalshFreedom That's why it was puzzling when you advocated including Mamdani in that tent. I know you are trying to keep an open mind, but he was an early sign of things to come all over the country.
Today, Congresswoman Hillary Scholten issued the following statement after Twitch streamer Hasan Piker said that American Jews who support Israel are inviting violence. https://t.co/6nb7r9wEtn
In his stream, Piker directly discussed and targeted Michigan State Senator Jeremy Moss, showing his picture while stating that “eventually someone will come around and take action not against Israel, but against American Jews.”
We are Democratic Members of Congress and proud Jewish Americans. While we don’t agree with Randy Fine on much, if anything, the grotesque, antisemitic campaign video posted by Republican Dan Bilzerian has no place in America. Our full statement.
Some of the best years of my life as a journalist were at @NYMag. So the current cover package on Arab and Muslim New York, a package that couldn’t find a way to celebrate one part of the city without also denigrating and erasing another, made me too sad to comment. Why bother anymore. But this @elikowaz response got it just right. https://t.co/yBtGzsRNC5
I refused to defend or support anyone with an SS Totenkampf tattoo, simply because they had a "D" next to their name.
I won't defend or support anyone who is too cowardly to stand up to extremists who think the mother of my best friend, who jumped from 95 stories because the alternative was worse, deserved what happened to her.
Her only crime was showing up to work that morning.
The Democrat running for the U.S. Senate in Michigan won't or can't stand up to the guy who says she "deserved" what she got that morning she showed up for work.
@TaylorTwellman@MLS He should be near the top of the list! He gets forgotten because the team hasn't done well, but the amount of chances he creates is one of the best of all-time in the league
One of the biggest propaganda victories in modern history was convincing millions of people that Palestine was basically a frozen civilization: an ancient Arab population sitting in the same villages for a thousand years until, one day, foreign Jews suddenly showed up from Europe.
It’s an astonishingly dishonest version of history.
Palestine was part of the Ottoman Empire. Its population was never frozen in time. People, including Jews, Arabs, and others, migrated throughout the region, settled, moved, intermarried, and crossed boundaries that were nothing like today’s national borders. Arabs came into Palestine from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and elsewhere, just as people moved out of Palestine and throughout the wider region.
Yes, Arabs lived in Palestine before modern Zionism. So did Jews. And yes, much of the later Arab population boom came from natural increase.
But somehow Palestinian ancestry gets treated as if it comes with a 1,000-year certificate of authenticity, while a Jew whose people originated in that exact land is automatically branded a “foreign settler.”
And the irony is incredible: an Arab can immigrate to America or Europe and immediately call himself American, British, French, or German. Yet a Jew can return to the land where the Jewish people originated, where Jewish civilization was born, and where Jews have maintained a continuous presence for thousands of years, buy land, build a house, and somehow he is still the “foreign settler.”
It’s a political mythology built around one ridiculous rule:
Every Arab is presumed indigenous, no matter where he immigrates to.
Every Jew is presumed foreign.
