Without NIH funds to run research labs at academic institutions, as a country we cannot train PhD students. No physician scientists. No undergraduates get experience in labs. Nothing.
Industry does none of these things.
Other countries will have to take the lead.

His new executive order would roll back a longstanding Clinton mandate requiring federal agencies to provide translation services, leaving millions of non-English speakers without crucial resources.

I think absolutely yes because a lot of therapeutics development doesn’t scale as efficiently as in model systems and fewer model species also limit successful translation to the clinic.

As a scientist, taxpayer, and entrepreneur working to develop a model of basic research in the private sector without NIH funds to accelerate/grow the path to effective human therapeutics:
I think the NIH should expand rather than contract support for basic research AND that virtually all aspects of NIH funding of the same should be reformed so that every public dollar goes further.
