Weapons (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) took my breath away. I have no choice but to award this film the Five Star Treatment -it’s out of my hands. This is one of those films that makes you question why movie theaters have recliners. You could’ve fit a watermelon between the back of my seat & the edge in which I sat on for two hours. I didn’t have to worry once about someone next to me using their phone. Who would be stupid enough to touch their phone during a film like this? The bottom line is that Weapons had no business whatsoever being this damn good. As always, the following review is spoiler free.

Weapons is a relatively straightforward story: 17 kids, all belonging to one classroom taught by a woman named Justine (Julia Garner), collectively go missing one night at 2:17 AM. In fact, there’s not much “backstory” here. This film doesn’t spend a lot of time of parents realizing their kids are missing - instead, we’re dropped right into the aftermath in which the parents are already looking for their kids. As you can imagine, the story here revolves around the town’s quest to find the missing kids. But that’s about all I feel comfortable giving away when it comes to the plot.

This film’s power is in its editing. It’s been said since the beginning of time that editing is the way in which a story is told. Here, this story utilizes exceptionally thoughtful editing to show in bits and pieces how different people throughout town have been impacted by the missing children. But what I appreciated about Weapons is there’s no unnecessary “overlap” when it comes time to tie one character’s storyline to another. We as an audience are never given a character vantage point that feels redundant or unnecessary: every editing decision here serves to move the plot forward in a way that feels organic & necessary.

And that plot is incredibly rich. This is not just a film about finding 17 missing children. It’s a film about how a teacher, a cop, a parent, a drug addict are all tied to one another in ways they could never be foresee. Meaning, their pain & their trauma is more closely connected than any of us thought. In many ways, there’s some DNA from Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia in this story, which is a huge creative risk, but Weapons sticks the landing. I think that’s really the best way I could possibly describe how all these characters start off in the distance but eventually come crashing into one another.

This makes for what I believe to be an unforgettable final 30 minutes. As I mentioned at the top of my review- no spoilers. However, the final 30 minutes is something I’ve been chewing on since I left the theater. Part of the reason why is because this film’s ending is incredibly unpredictable and incredibly satisfying. Emphasis on the “satisfying” part. The satisfaction I felt from the film’s end enhanced the entire viewing experience for me. It’s not everyday we see a horror film start as strong as Weapons and still finish with so much steam. This movie never lets up & never runs out of gas, all the way through the final frame.

Lastly, a word on the cast. How could I not? Julia Gardner & Josh Brolin are beyond words. They give the two best performances in this film & they each knock it out of the park. Don’t ask me to choose which performance I liked better- I can’t. Prior to this film, I wasn’t huge on Julia Gardner. But her performance impressed me so much, I think this might be a turning point. But beyond Gardner & Brolin is a cast that’s just so deep & so reliable. Veteran actors like Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, and Austin Adams- just to name a few-take the quality of this film to a higher level. There’s not a single actor or a single performance in this film that I didn’t love.

Weapons is one of the best films I’ve seen this year.
