Engaging citizen scientists in sand tiger shark research & conservation | Joint project by NC Aquariums, SEZARC, WildMe, Duke, Coastal Studies Institute & more
๐ข Calling all divers & underwater explorers ๐ข If you have photos (new or old) of sand tiger #sharks, please submit them to our #SpotASharkUSA citizen-science program to help us learn more about this shark species ๐ท Blue Elements Imaging #SharkResearch#CitizenScience#TeamWork
#SharkCam through @exploreorg , @FPTower , and Dr. Burge at CCU has been a long-time collaborator with SAS USA and our team is so glad the cam is live again!

This person will support our exciting sand tiger shark research including telemetry and photo-identification projects.
Happy Friday from our team! ๐ฆ
#Sandtigersharks here in #NorthCarolina (& other areas) are strongly associated with hard-bottom habitats, artificial reefs, and shipwrecks as photographed here on the #Aeolus by citizen-scientist and underwater photographer ๐ทDevin Daniels

Happy #ToothyTuesday shark enthusiasts! ๐ฆ
Still sitting on #sandtiger#shark images from previous dives? ๐คฟ
Now is a perfect time to relive your aquatic memories and consider submitting your sand tiger images to us at https://t.co/oxhTQ9SvPX ๐

Happy #ToothyTuesday shark friends! ๐ฆ
The wreck of the #Caribsea is a #sandtiger hotspot, as you can see here. Several #NorthCarolina wrecks host large aggregations of sand tiger #sharks seasonally.
We all hope you have a great week!

A bit of a late tweet, but last week our research leader @SeaPriceNC was honored to speak of our research & the role of NC State students during Dr. Schiffman's (@WhySharksMatter) book tour for his book, Why Sharks Matter. Thank you for having us and go out and get a copy! ๐ฆ
Happy #ToothyTuesday from the Spot A Shark USA team! ๐ฆ
Seen swimming alongside this beautiful female #sandtiger#shark is a juvenile banded rudderfish, which belongs to the jack and pompano family. ๐

It's #MatchingMonday ๐
Meet Crescent, a female #sandtigershark that had not seen since 2019 until this past June of 2022. Crescent was spotted 2x in May 2019 on the SPAR wreck & this year on the Aeolus! ๐คฟ
We are so happy to see Crescent again๐ฆ

For background, Claud was named by our partner & shark conservationist Tanya Houppermans of Blue Elements Imaging and Exploration. ๐ฆ
This NC wreck-loving sand tiger was named after the amazing and legendary North Carolina pioneer #SCUBA diver, Claud Hull.

Exciting news! ๐๐ฆ
Claud the #sandtiger#shark has been spotted again for the first time this year in June on the wreck of the #Aeolus by super-collaborator & photographer Frank Krasovec! ๐ฆ
We are so happy to see Claud again after a year-long wait. ๐
Follow thread for more!
Claud the young #sandtigershark was 1st spotted in North Carolina in 2019 by our partner ๐ทBlue Elements Imaging and Exploration. He has since been photographed 17 different times on NC wrecks by multiple divers/citizen-scientists since 2019. ๐ฆ
Thank you all for your hard work!

Big thank you to Thomas Faulkner, Bobby Purifoy, and Frank Krasovec for helping us document Potter the #shark's behavior & ecology! ๐ฆ
As always, thanks to all of our contributors and partners for aiding in our #sharkscience

It's #ToothyTuesday & we'd like to introduce Potter, a young #sandtigershark spotted thrice in June on the wreck of the #Caribsea
One cool thing about Potter is we have the spot-pattern of both sides of this shark thanks to citizen-scientist divers (cont.)
๐ธ Frank Krasovec
It's a match! ๐
Research intern @b_regester was ID'ing #sandtiger photos from community-scientists & found a resighting of this lovely #sandtiger#shark on the #Caribsea- first spotted in September 2021 by ๐ธDevin Daniels & again in July 2022 by ๐ธJuergen Scharner. So cool!๐ฆ
@SpotASharkUSA This shark's name is Cecil! Named by NC Aquarium Conservation and Research Coordinator @SeaPriceNC after her father. Cecil has been spotted at different shipwrecks along the coast of NC but has been spotted most often at the wreck of the Aeolus.

You've likely seen today (July 14th) is #SharkAwarenessDay ๐ฆ
There are >500 shark species w/ more being discovered by scientists w/ advancements in research. #Sharks of all shapes & sizes play critical roles in the health of our world's aquatic ecosystems!
๐ท Shawn Harper

#Sharks also face several threats, with significant declines in certain populations worldwide.
Take a few moments today to appreciate and learn more about these diverse, important, and wonderful animals! ๐ฆ

Happy #SharkAwarenessDay (AKA #SharkandRayAwarenessDay). Yes, you may be "aware" of sharks, but are you aware of their diversity? Or the existential threats they face from under-regulated and unsustainable fishing pressure? It's a good day to learn more.
