@meralhece I was reading the Torah the other day: "When you lay siege to a city for many days, do not destroy the trees therein by swinging an ax against them, because from them you will eat..." Devarim 20:19. Even their religion prohibits this...
If you are looking for something to watch on the weekends, consider watching "Threads," a BBC documentary about the impact of nuclear exchange on human civilization. It is absolutely devastating but, sadly, quite relevant today.
As a lifelong immigrant born to parents who escaped the civil war in Tajikistan, most wars are not justified. Long-term economic prosperity is only possible through long-term peace and competition through healthy diplomacy and trade instead of war.
@Pseudome17@nntaleb The impact of the research also matters. We are talking about public and commercial policy changes with healthcare, agricultural, and industrial consequences. Hence, there is a lot of resistance to seeking out negative effects - bad incentives all around.
@skndd@nntaleb Because they have already proven their long-term effects. Concentrating, purifying, and modifying them are already big enough changes. Wholly artificial substances are foreign to us, and the body can have expected AND unexpected problems in dealing with them.
@Pseudome17@nntaleb Well, more studies started recognizing the role of omega-6 in driving systemic inflammation. Also, the consensus on cholesterol and LDL levels has become more nuanced, not just "cholesterol bad". Who knows where it will take us in 5-10 years?
@ZKForTre@nntaleb You perfectly got what I meant. It is said that 8-10% of Western calorie intake is from industrial seed oils. This number has been zero for millions of years. We are not used to such high amounts of PUFAs in our diet. Maybe it's no big deal, but it needs to be carefully studied.
Our members escaped forceful mobilizations in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. I see these issues in all our countries as one - forceful conversion of innocent men into cannon fodder for an unnecessary war that serves the governments that do not represent us.
If you are reading this, please check our small grass-roots organization that promotes peace in the post-Soviet region, connects radical pacifists, and helps obtain humanitarian visas for political dissidents and conscientious objectors in Germany.
Here is our website: https://t.co/VWq8VM0hYN and IG: @postsovietleft. Our work may seem obscure to you, but I believe we are the only ones who strive for the "third way" in the current Russia-Ukraine war and are committed to building bridges between our countries.
@snowalgo@nntaleb Unfortunately, it rarely happens with this type of research. Positive effects are often overrepresented because 1) of financial or/and political incentives 2) it is the "norm" and the alternative would require a radical revolution of the model (see Thomas Kuhn)
@snowalgo@nntaleb My reply was not against the OP, but rather to add another angle. Speaking from a biologist, again, it would be nice to study both positive and negative effects, if all the statistical matter is accounted for
@nntaleb Hey, just wanted to thank you for your incredible work as an author. You taught me how to approach complex reality without falling into traps like these. As a biologist, you helped me avoid the fallacies of many academics I saw around me. The academia is listening to you
