"Narendra Modi, while speaking at the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas celebration on the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Patel yesterday, said that while Patel wanted 'all of Kashmir' to be united with India, Nehru 'did not let his wish be fulfilled' and that 'he (Modi) completed his unfinished task by reading down Article 370 to fully integrate J&K with India'.  Modi, in his pathological hatred for Pandit Nehru, distorts history and sets a false narrative to discredit him.  In fact, Patel was willing to trade off Kashmir. According to his Political Secretary, V Shankar, "the Sardar was content to leave the decision to the Ruler of Jammu and Kashmir and that if the Ruler felt that his and his State's interest lay in accession to Pakistan, he would not stand in his way...if Jinnah allowed the King (Hyderabad) and the pawn (Junagadh) to go to India, Patel might have let the Queen (Kashmir) go to Pakistan, but Jinnah rejected the deal."  Patel was a party to the decision to grant special status to Kashmir and include Article 370 in the Constitution. That Modi not only abrogated Article 370 but also downgraded the State of J&K by dividing it into two union territories for political expediency, defying a permanent solution, is a different story."

Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru were great men, patriots and comrades-in-arms. Both decided what was in the interest of the country during the period 1947-1950. We salute both leaders.
