May Jesus empower you with tenderness to forgive when relationships are strained. May you see those He's given you to love with fresh eyes of compassion and grace. Believe that miracles still happen our day, because they do. Refuse to turn inward and numb out.
May God give you absolute clarity and divine insight so you can see things as they are and not as they seem. May you have an uncanny ability to sort through the barrage of information and discern what's true.
May Jesus help you guard your heart with all diligence. May you instantly discern the source of your thoughts and emotions so you'll know what to uproot and what to nurture. How do you want to grow in the days ahead? Plant those seeds in your heart now.
“I Am One Jesus Loves”: Thinking about St. John the Evangelist
For centuries, on December 27, the church has paused to remember and give thanks for a disciple with an odd nickname. Or maybe “nickname” is not the best nomenclature. How about self-description? I’m speaking of John, who preferred to call himself, “the disciple Jesus loves.”
What an oddly beautiful expression.
Brennan Manning once said, “If John were to be asked, ‘What is your primary identity in life?’ he would not reply, ‘I am a disciple, an apostle, an evangelist, an author of one of the four Gospels,’ but rather, ‘I am the one Jesus loves.’”
John was indeed a disciple and apostle.
He was one of the four evangelists.
He also wrote three epistles and Revelation.
He thus wrote 5 books of the NT.
But, if Manning is right (and I think he is), John would want none of that on his tombstone. Instead, chisel the epitaph: “Here lies the body of one Jesus loves.”
John left us a marvelously deep Gospel; three letters rich with theology; and an apocalypse that has captivated hearts and minds for two millennia. But he has also left us with a wonderful manner of seeing ourselves, and others, in a new and life-changing way.
When you look in the mirror this morning, say, “I am one Jesus loves.”
When you see the face of others, say, “Here is one Jesus loves.”
That is who I am. That is who you are.
And because of that, nothing is, nor ever can be, the same.
MERCIFUL Lord, we beseech thee to cast thy bright beams of light upon thy Church, that it being enlightened by the doctrine of thy blessed Apostle and Evangelist Saint John, may so walk in the light of thy truth, that it may at length attain to the light of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Book of Common Prayer)
May we rest in the fact that our faith is in God’s relentless pursuit of us, not our up-and-down pursuit of Him. Oh, the depth of the riches of His love, mercy, and kindness!
Two sinners, hiding in Eden.
God walks up and asks, “Where are you?”
Two sinners, heading toward Emmaus.
God walks up and asks, “What are you discussing?”
Our God seeks us out when we’re in the wrong place.
And his questions summon us home.
It is in God’s presence that we find the fullness of joy. And the joy of the Lord is our strength, our superpower. It’s in God’s presence where we receive correction, direction, comfort, and assurance. God’s presence brings clarity to our confusion, hope in place of despair.
I’m inspired by Mary because she holds the contemplative and justice traditions together. She deeply ponders *and* boldly prophesies.
To ponder without prophesying is often impotent faith.
To prophesy without pondering is often ignorant faith.

The incarnate Son comes without strife, so gentle that his voice is not to be heard above the chatter of the street (Mt 12:19). It is because of this approach that the Gentiles, or people generally, will finally come to have confidence in him. -Dallas Willard

May God surprise you with moments of grace and refreshment. May He bless you with sudden belly laughter and watery eyed joy. May He give you a gift that you least expect. And may He inspire you to pray more audaciously than you ever have before. And tonight, sleep deeply!
John the Baptist was filled with the Spirit from his mother’s womb. (Luke 1:15)
John was a unique man, with a particular mission. And he was filled with the Spirit before he did any good deed.
God pours out the Spirit not because we are good, but because God is good.

Father in heaven, I can be such an earthbound traveler at times. I’m so aware of my default settings when it comes to sin, selfishness, and other people’s faults. Forgive me, Lord. Transform me, Father. Make me into the person You always dreamed I could be.
