I stand with Suryanarayan Doolla. I will not be a mute spectator to the brazen weaponisation of the 'SC/ST Act' to settle scores with a Professor who caught a student cheating in an exam.

Until 18th September (the day of Sahil Wakode's death), there was not a single complaint from any student, either with the SC/ ST Cell of IIT Bombay or the administration, of any act of caste-based discrimination by this Professor.

When the student unfortunately took his own life after being caught red-handed in the act of cheating, his parents came up with this theory of 'caste atrocity'.

According to Sahil's father, the Professor subjected the student to "severe mental harassment and casteist slurs over the past three months".

Where and how did Sahil communicate this information to his father?

Is this revelation in the form of written text/ whatsapp message or an unrecorded phone call (which we can't verify because Sahil is not in this mortal world)?

And the biggest question of all: Why did Sahil's parents not lodge a complaint with IIT-Bombay or the police and instead chose to let their son suffer for 3 months at the hands of this alleged 'casteist' Professor?

Clearly, they are aware of the provisions of SC/ ST Act. Why did they not take any action? Was it because nothing like this has ever happened?

But for 1 minute, I would have believed their version of events. But this part of the NDTV report got me thinking hard -

"The complaint explicitly names Professor Suryanarayan Dulla, who was also an invigilator during the exam in which Sahil was caught cheating, alleging that he hurled caste-based abuses at the behest of Director Shireesh B Kedare."

Wow.

A professor at IIT-Bombay was conspiring with the institute's Director to bully 1 particular student from the SC community (out of 100s who study there), knowing well that one complaint from him would jeopardise their careers.

When Sahil's father decided to lie with impunity, he should have worked alongside 'caste baiters' on social media to make his conspiracy theory believable, at least.

Because no one with an iota of rationality is buying this narrative, except, of course, politicians and influencers whose existence is based on manufactured and exaggerated victimhood.

In normal cases, a police complaint would have been filed for 'abetment of suicide.'

But Sahil's parents know that a complaint under the SC/ST Act allows for 'preventive detention' without investigation.

This is the fastest way Professor Suryanarayan Dulla could be sent behind bars.

If you are one of those who are willing to stay silent because you believe that it can't happen to you, then be ready for a surprise in jail someday.

Speak up against the brazen misuse of legislation that was intended to give justice to marginalised communities.

Religious liberty does not expire for Hindus when you decide you’ve won. You don’t get to tear anything down. Not legally. Not morally. Not in the country for which I actually sacrificed.

When she started letting schoolchildren build satellites, senior Indian scientists told her to stop.

"A couple of very senior well-known scientists in the country told me to stop spoiling children's futures and get them to focus on studying first."

Their satellites have since flown on rockets belonging to both NASA and ISRO.

Her name is Dr Srimathy Kesan. She runs Space Kidz India, a Chennai aerospace company registered in 2016 with around 47 people on its rolls today, built on one unusual principle: students should not merely study space, they should build the things that go there.

The first person she recruited was a college student who had come to interview her for his magazine. His name was Rifath Sharook, from Pallapatti, a village in Karur district. By the end of that conversation both of them understood he was in the wrong course.

After the Indian scientists said no, Kesan wrote to NASA. Jaydeep Mukherjee, who directs the Florida Space Grant Consortium, told her to stop aiming straight for orbit and start with stratospheric balloons instead.

So they did. Then Rifath's team entered a NASA student competition with something that weighed 64 grams, built from 3D printed carbon fibre. They nicknamed it the gulab jamun, because that is what they were eating when someone asked why a satellite could not be that small.

They named it KalamSat. On 22 June 2017 NASA flew it on a sounding rocket from Wallops Island, the first time NASA had flown an experiment built by an Indian student.

ISRO, which Kesan had been pitching without success for years, called soon after. She was given six days to build and deliver.

On 24 January 2019, PSLV-C44 placed KalamSat V2 in orbit at 1.26 kilograms, the lightest satellite ever put there. Then came AzaadiSAT and AzaadiSAT-2, assembled from payloads made by 750 schoolgirls from some of the remotest villages in India.

Space Kidz India has now flown 19 balloon missions, three suborbital payloads and five orbital satellites. Kesan holds ambassador status at NASA, the European Space Agency and Russia's Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre, the only Indian to do so.

The college student who turned up to interview her for a magazine is now the lead scientist at Space Kidz India.

THE CASE OF DR DOOLLA: FROM AWARD WINNING PROFESSOR AND EXAM INVIGILATOR TO SC/ST FIR.
Dr Doolla completed his MTech and PhD from two IITs. He has won multiple honours and awards.
On Friday, Sahil Wakode (20), a second-year Dalit student in the Energy Science section, was caught using a mobile phone during an examination conducted between 2 pm and 4 pm. Dr Doolla was the invigilator. A few hours later, Wakode died by suicide.
Soon after, protests broke out on campus with students blaming the "SYSTEM" that puts too much exam pressure on students. In response IIT Bombay put out an official statement saying no formal disciplinary action had been initiated against Wakode. The institute claims the student was counselled by faculty and assured that the incident would not derail his academic career.
NOW, THE SAME PROFESSOR WHO INVIGILATED THAT EXAM HAS BEEN NAMED IN AN FIR INVOKING PROVISIONS OF THE SC/ST ACT. The act was invoked because Wakode's parents accused Dr Doolla of "casteism".

Dr Doolla is an acclaimed professor of Energy Sciences at IIT Bombay. An MTech and a PhD from IIT, he has received excellence in teaching award twice. He recently caught a student cheating. The student committed suicide.

Dr Doolla has now been charged under the SC/ST Act.
